I was out on my 08 S40 (around 5800miles on it) on this beautiful 84 degree day. It's probably the 3rd time I've taken it out since the winter. Everything was running well until I stopped and filled the gas tank.

When I left the gas station just before I was about to shift to second the bike lurched and died. I pushed it to the side of the road and tried to put it in neutral but it wouldn't shift. It was like it knocked against the gears but wouldn't go into them. I started the engine up again to see if it would start and found it started fine but didn't cut out when I put the kickstand down. Over the next 10 minutes or so I could get it to go back and forth from 1st to neutral but nothing else. After the bike sat for a little while as I tried to figure out what was going on I tried it again and it worked so I headed home and had no other troubles.

I tried various searches of the forums but didn't turn up anything that sounds like what happened. I'm good with tools but a complete novice with regard to working on vehicles. I'm not sure where to start looking to find the culprit. Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like a shifter issue. Have you dropped it? Shift rod bent?
Do you have problems with getting into first? Do you stomp the shifter?
Some oils keep it working better.

What are you using?

Rotella T 15-40 keeps it smiling.

I haven't dropped it. Sometimes it seems reluctant to go down into first but I never have to stomp it. I figured I was just downshifting too soon.

I'll try some of the oil you recommended. This will be my first wrenching on it myself so I don't know what has been used by the mechanics that serviced it last October.

Sitting in neutral with the clutch pulled can make it hard to get in first. If you pull the lever in and apply pressure and hear clicking and a thump, that's okay. Forcing the pedal will lead to a bent rod. Once bent,they are not stiff, and often eventually break. Never at home.

The oil is available at Tractor Supply, Wal-Mart, around$13.00/gallon. Parts store, maybe more. Truck stops are good about having it.

Be a good time to get a few oil filters, don't lose the o ring behind the filter, it can stick to it and go in the trash. And NO, I didn't Do that... okay, I did, now stop snickering..

The hardware store has orings.

Also, very important, DO NOT put the oil filter in backwards!

I just rode it 30 miles round trip to get filters and all went well. I'll pick up some oil and change it tomorrow. Thanks for the links to the videos - it seems pretty straightforward.

I swear I will not put the filter in backwards or lose the o-ring :)

Sometimes difficulty in shifting means it's time to change the oil.
