Batman,
I have been following with interest your experiment with the pawl removed from the cam chain tensioner. I couldn't find your original post on this but am wondering if you have the slot in your tensioner body and the pin in the plunger to stop the whole thing coming apart? If you don't have this modification I believe that you will have a fairly good seal between the plunger and the body which is giving a damping effect and restricting how far the plunger moves in as it tries to compress the air behind it. Does that seem logical? You seem to be succeeding at what you are doing!

Garry I ground three small flats on the plunger base, full length, to allow the oil out ,other wise the plunger could lock up putting stress on the chain and defeat the reason of taking out the spring in the first place.

OK. Well there goes my theory. The only other thing I can think off is that the plunger spring itself is strong enough to resist the chain fluctuations.

You can compress air but you can't compress the oil and I'm guessing that's why you ground out reliefs to let the oil out allowing plunger to move as it needs

Ruttlt&& Garry,if you go to Arman's cam chain tensioner revisited,page 13 I give a blow by blow of how to do the tensioner that allows minimal movement of the tensioner before it goes solid.

Thanks for the link Batman. I read your post on how to modify the tensioner and it all makes logical sense. My S40 only has 3000km on it at this point and I have not had the clutch cover off - dismantling the bike will be left until the factory warranty runs out in 21 months. I do however want to be prepared for when the tensioner does require modification and am watching each and every post with interest. I will be interested to see what you find out when you next take your clutch cover off and am also very interested in what Versy is up too. I am hoping that in 21 months this will all be settled!  ;)

Depending on average ride length, wouldn't be too shook up about the chain till at least 12,000 miles. I Would take some time and listen to the engine, carefully, using a piece of tubing in the ear or stethoscope or even a screwdriver pressed against the bone in front of the ear.

Garry It sounds like you have a new bike ,If you arrive at 10,000/12000  miles before your 21 months run out ,I'd be pulling the side cover off and checking the tensioner anyway just for peace of mind.....oops guess JOG was thinking along the same lines!

Yes it is a new bike and yes the clutch cover will be coming off at around 10,000 miles
