Title: 18" rear wheel Post by welshpete on 06/15/16 at 12:54:13 ok, so i've been plundering my workshop and a mate's garage and i've got a set of mudguards (fenders) and some handlebars, seat etc to turn a savage into a 1940's style bike. i dont have the bike yet but i like to prepare! are there any retrofit 18" wire wheels that will fit or is it a case of lacing an 18" rim to the existing hub? any clearance or belt issues? thanks in advance for any abuse/advice. |

Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by Dave on 06/15/16 at 14:08:07 I don't know if any of the Suzuki GT bikes....or the T500 could be used. Good wheel/rims of that era are a bit hard to find in workable condition. Here is a link to a really nice bike in the Build Section. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1369527081/0 |

Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by welshpete on 06/15/16 at 14:15:15 thanks, thats kinda the look i'm aiming for. i want to keep the belt drive though. |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by welshpete on 06/15/16 at 14:17:22 hey justin, dont get all sensitive on me! british wit is often laced with a hint of sarcasm.. no offence meant. |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/15/16 at 14:59:37 Yeah, I had a good friend who was into British humor. He tried to get me to understand,,, I'm just not tracking.. I Tried, I really tried. I did get Run Away, Run Away... |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by Ruttly on 06/16/16 at 10:15:34 Here's a straight answer , you may have swingarm clearance issues depending on tire size of new 18" rim. Easy to modify swingarm. Or what do the call it over there a swinging yoke or something like that. |

Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by ohiomoto on 06/17/16 at 07:01:03 Does anyone know what size/length spokes we need to lace up an 18" rim? Any good sources? Thanks, Tim |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by Dave on 06/17/16 at 16:57:12 Buchanan spoke and rim.......in CA. They make them in stainless. |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by ohiomoto on 06/21/16 at 07:05:16 Thanks, I assume they know the length or do I need to measure the hub? Also, looking at 2.15 and 2.50 rim widths. Probably going to 110/80-18 dual sport tire or 120/80-18 street tire. Any suggestions? Will I need to modify the swing arm with those sizes? Ryca says we have 26" of clearance before swing arm modification. I believe both of those tires are under 25.5". |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by Dave on 06/21/16 at 07:27:41 You just tell Buchanan that you have an S40/LS650....they already have the statistics for the Savage hubs. You should be fine if you follow RYCA's suggestions - problems do occur when you get vintage tires that are tall and have flat tread profiles. |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by batman on 06/21/16 at 15:40:27 I don't understand the need to go to an 18 inch wheel to attain the look , WD and I have with the stock wheel. If you're wanting higher gearing it would be easer/cheaper to do the kawa front pulley converstion to keep the belt. |

We all have our quirks about what we like.....I don't understand putting struts on a bike to replace the shocks! I changed to an 18" wheel as I wanted a Cafe' bike.....not a cruiser. The 18" rim is a bigger diameter, the tire is far less "beefy" and looks right on the bike. Going to a 140/90-15 would get about the same OD - but it also slows down the handling and just looks wrong on a bike that is supposed to be light and nimble. Next time I am changing the rear wheel...maybe I will throw on a spare 15" wheel and tire that I have and snap a comparison photo....maybe even go for a ride and see what it feels like. |

For me, this has nothing to do with taller gearing. Personally, I think the Savage is an ugly duckling sportster wannabe. It's just not my style, but I like that it's a simple, under powered, reliable thumper. The perfect bike for my wife and two sons learn on and perfect commuting bike for myself. I purchased the bike for the purpose of turning it into something I think is cool. It's a matter of what you like. I like old British bikes, early Japanese models with skinny tires and dirt bikes. |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by ohiomoto on 06/27/16 at 08:54:30 Is our 19" front rim a 2.15 or a 2.50?? I'm leaning towards a 2.15 for the rear if the front is a 2.15. I'm fine with the width for my rear wheel, but I surly don't want my rear rim to be narrower than the front. |
Title: Re: 18" rear wheel Post by Dave on 06/27/16 at 10:56:52 The stock front rim is 2.15" x 19" |
