Title: Forking around
Post by Armen on 06/13/16 at 19:09:16

Glad I read Gary from NJ article on forks. Chopped up  a lower tree to make an upper, bought a set of preload adjustable fork caps on Ebay, and put it all together.
Now the front end sits about 1/2" lower, and I don't have 2 gaping holes in the top tree. And I have pinch bolts on the top tree!
Life is good.
Thanks, Gary!

Don't forget a fork brace , makes forks feel rock solid , improves handling !

Yup. It's on the list. Gotta decide which one.

I've heard yes and no on that one. Anybody with a brace wanna chime in?

Kris,

The fork brace works.

In Texas we have trillions of cracks in the roads surface, running the same direction as the road. All motorcycles well tend to follow those cracks with the front wheel. With the T-Kat Brace you can without a doubt feel less 'wondering" with the front wheel.

My 2 cents worth.

I noticed a real difference. I rode it hard, dragging pegs.

Kris,
I've installed lots of fork braces, and worked on lots of bikes that others have installed braces on. I think the real variable is how carefully the brace was installed. If the forks aren't lined up well, then the brace makes it worse.
On the bikes where it is done well, there is always a positive change.

Thanks! I'll add that one to my To-Do list!

On the 05 and newer ones they put a groove near the top of the fork leg and mounted the bug deflector. Getting the brace on and not touching the fender isn't any kind of easy.
A piece of shoe box cardboard is pretty close..

Just poked around for the article I was thinking about. In fact in was Motorcyclist Mag from '85 that did the 'Deslopping the Sliders' article. I remember when it came out. Seems like only a year or two ago...
Anyhoo, still a valid article. I think I'll do the voodoo on my forks.
If I can find a spare set of fork legs for not a ton of $, I'll buy them and twiddle them.
