Title: Preventing Oil Change Overfill
Post by hawk41 on 06/13/16 at 09:34:13

Anybody have a method that easily prevents an oil change overfill when pouring new oil from a 1 gallon container, other than staring at the sight glass? Just finished installing Versy so engine has little or no oil. Thanks!  :-/

I have a 1 quart measuring cup... :-/

I add 16oz at a time to make pouring easier... 8-)

I use one of these but I cut the tube a lot shorter.  You can get them at WallyWorld or most parts stores for a few bux.

Put a 2 1/4" block or something under the side stand. Then fill up to the lower mark on the sight glass. You will have to check it again after you run it because of the filter cavity. Give it time to drain back down before checking the second time.

Get a funnel that fits in the oil fill hole.
Fill the funnel than let it drain, fill then drain, fill then drain...

I use the gallon jug of Rotella. I just pour carefully. Draining excess oil is a pain!

I use the wife's measuring cup and funnel.

I run them through the dishwasher before she gets home.

Haha. I did the same thing with her good Pyrex measuring jug when I'm changing fork oil. She wouldn't have a clue.

A dishwasher is your friend.

I remember the first dishwasher I had many years ago and that aluminum parts coming back from the machine shop could be run through the dishwasher to get rid of all the grit and dirt from bead blasting.

I put a small block Ford cylinder head in the oven to dry it out after I pressure washed it. Ya gotta make sure to stay at a low temp though to keep from warping it. I think I used something just above the boiling point.

I got caught too!  :(

The problem is you have to have an innocent look to go along with the excuse. I give myself away too easily!

You need to play poker. It'll cost you to learn how to keep your face right, but, you get to munch chips and dip, drink beer and have fun WHILE learning a much needed skill. Yes, it's a Win Win situation.
They win your money and you learn how to get away with stuff and your wife stays happy.

I just transfer oil from the gallon jug to an empty quart bottle. Twice. 2 quarts is sufficient.
