Does it/should it ever be replaced just to be on the safe side so you don't get stranded?

It is a very expensive replacement, but not much can go wrong with it either.

key cause of failure is leaving the ignition on overnite with a brand new battery.  Power to the coil is what kills it, a power fet burns out.

The best habit you can have is keying your bike just before hitting the start button, and pulling the key out right after shut off. that way the worst thing you might do is taking the key out in the park position which will run your battery down. My bike is 20 years old and I still run the same Ign. module it came with.

Electronic systems like these ignition modules either break down very quickly or go more or less forever. If the module gets through the warranty period unscathed it will last the life of the bike unless destroyed by human intervention!
