Title: Question about oil level
Post by Redryder652 on 06/08/16 at 18:05:32

So the other day I added a bit of oil to my savage, and it was probably 80 degrees out, I probably put about 50 miles on since then,  and I checked the oil today, about 50 degrees, and it was just up to the low line. Can the outside temp cause this fluctuation?

Anything over about 55-60 mph and you get a rolling oil change. Have you been riding fast lately?

70 mph tops, what do these bikes eat up oil?

They don't go through oil really fast but you do need to keep a check on the level before you ride.

It's in the nature of a big single to have some extra blowby,.. at extended higher rpm's...
Nothing mechanically wrong... she's just gassy... ;D

So what if your a newbie, and you forget to check your oil once in a while and it goes below the window ( not saying I don't check my oil) where is the super danger zone? I've gone a little low once or twice.

You should get accustomed to ALWAYS checking your oil, tire pressure, lights, etc before riding. Pilots pre-flight their aircraft for a reason. We should too!

Kris01 is right, on the one really long trip I ever did, Our leader arrived at the start and after 100 miles or so, complained his Harley Thingyason was wandering about. Turned out he had 12 psi in his back tyre.

New oil change, run it, very low loss.
Get to 1500 miles,
Run it
Goes through oil.

So when do I check the oil to make sure it's at the right level, I've heard people say hot, and others say cold. I'm assuming cold, am I right?

Cold is normal.
But if you have a RYCA mod, you may want to do a hot and a running check to make sure you don't have a forming issue.

Some have even set it high enough to see while on the sidestand. Low isn't good. It can use oil at any old time.
Watch it carefully, especially when you run it hard.
Monitor the use and you'll learn when it uses oil , especially as the miles add up on the oil. I don't think I made 3,000 miles, ever. Towards the 3,000 miles mark mine was using fast enough I just changed it.

*Well, that's news to me!  I thought we were supposed to check our oil warm or hot, after it sits for 5 minutes or so.

Well the manual does say to run it for 3 minutes then let it sit for 5.

So you do that every morning?  Right   ::)  If that's normal for you, don't let me stop you.
It might necessary on frosty mornings in Denver.

I don't have time for that BS.  I put a brick under the stand, check the level and I'm done.
3 minutes doesn't warm the oil much anyway.

I've been known to check it before a ride and minutes after I parked it. Especially as the miles added up.

Yeah, that' my fairly-regular routine.  I check it every week or so before riding and also will go back out to the garage an hour after getting home and see where the level is with warm oil.  Have to admit, I don't check it before riding every time.  I don't have time for that.

I have to admit that I don't check it EVERY time. I check maybe every 2 or 3 rides. It doesn't burn oil fast enough to warrant being that diligent about checking. I have to add maybe 1/2 qt. every dozen or so rides.

I'm with verslagen. I put a block of wood under the side stand. To make it consistent I use the same piece of wood every time. Mine is 2.25" thick and  the oil comes up to the lower mark on the sight glass.
You can check it as long as you give the oil time to drain down, 15' is fine.
