Title: Cali residents:  ever bump off a biker?
Post by zipidachimp on 06/08/16 at 12:54:29

Just got back from a trip to Sonoma raceway+goodguys hotrod show. Driving north from San Jose last thursday, got passed by at least 12 bikes IN MY LANE! wtf?  If I had drifted 2" left, I would have killed any biker lane-splitting me.
Harleys and ducatis you can hear coming, but BMWs and Goldwings are almost dead silent until they are past.
Who thought lane-splitting was a good idea?
Very scary to a visitor! >:(

If I see an outta state plate, I know instantly to give you guys a 1/4" more room or it freaks you out.   ;D
And heaven forbid passing a range rover, those guys aren't used to roads and wander all over the lane and both lines are in for a beating.

the Hertz had a Cali plate! 8-) How long has this been going on? Was in Cali 3 years ago and saw none of this nonsense!

Oh man! I exit the freeway anytime I see a rental.
Either they're a swivel head tourist or a carom car getting the bumper fixed.

So when you are in your car.....do you have to check your side view mirrors before you spit out your gum? ::)

seeing a biker comiing at me/for me, he gets all the room he needs. It's the ones I don't see that's scary.
Trying to read the highway signs at the same time..........boom!
Spoke to a CHP at the car show, they don't like it either, but 2 vehicles are legal to occupy the same
lane at the same time, if there's room!  8-)

To be serious for a moment...

Not supposed to happen above 30 mph.  Max speed dif... 10 mph.

Above that, you should be weaving not splitting.   8-)

Ok, so traffic on 101/680 was 10 to 30 mph, really slow. First bike caught me off guard, then remembered 'lane-splitting' from somewhere, still a bit off-putting. Decided to stay in my own lane. Next 12 bikes hammered through. Traffic too freakin' heavy for my liking. All going nowhere? Nice place to visit though! 8-)

I had a similar experience a few years ago when I headed up to Matlock, UK on my old Suzuki GS550/750 (? had both).

Sunny Sunday, mid-day, perfect everything....except for the 'plastic-fantastic' guys passing just inches away.....
If I'd sneezed while I was riding there would've been contact....

There are lane splitters and lane splitters, I've seen a video clip on this site of guys splitting at 70 mph, they did it successfully, if they hadn't, they would have got split heads, joints ,knees or what ever. I've had bikers go round each side of me on two lane black top just to show what men they are and what a girly bike an S40 is. They will also do this to people riding GN 250'S

I do a daily commute of just under 140 miles from Manteca to Oakland and back in my truck. Staying in the fast lane almost the whole way, rearview mirror adjusted a tad to the right,I get passed 30 to 40 times each way. Always do my best to stay to the left and leave them a door to pass thru ! I used to ride but not anymore it's just to insane out there, I see at the very least 2 bikes down a week. I guess would rather turn on my a/c and listen to some blues on my way home knowing I am going to get there. They don't bother me a bit , it's like a motorcycle show on the way home, get to see all kinds of bikes, wish them all safe passage. It's the norm here in CA!

How does anyone cope with all that traffic? plus the bikes!  Car show in Pleasonton was in a beautiful park. Nice place to visit! 8-)

Yeah it sucks , I think it makes you a better driver & decision maker. You get good at it. I wish the bikes would just slow down some , I hate seeing them on the ground !

Bikers do that here in Texas, too
A lot of folks ask me, when they find out I ride "What do I do if I see a biker overtaking in my lane at (name a godawful speed)"
"Nothing, you can't out accelerate, out brake, or out maneuver him, hold your position and let him figure it out"
I guarantee you, as a guy who 'splits' himself, the gap between your car and those bikes looks a lot bigger to a guy on a bike than it does to a guy in a cage
I DO follow the rules Versy named, and I usually ride on the line if I'm passing between cars

Good advice, I'd rather they do nothing then suddenly veer away. (Please don't hit the wall)
Usually, you can tell when they are looking at you as they slightly veer towards you.  Then straighten out when they look back.

If you are driving and you see them coming , turn your head and look at them in  the mirror they look for the head turning try eye contact then they know your looking. If your are splitting then just think every car is out to kill you and stay focused no day dreaming. I drive in the fast lane and try to stay left. See. Too many car/truck vs bike accidents  and the bike always loses , Always !

This is all scary stuff to a hayseed. I road 15 miles of i-state this AM and was passed 3 times by cages. That's it!

In Dallas you can usually get away with slowly rolling up the shoulder when it's 100deg and four lanes of parking lot. Just enough to get some air over the cooling fins. It sucks... bike hot as a poker and riding through glass, nuts n bolts and every other kind of FOD.

Rural Montana or Idaho starts sounding pretty good.

Happens to me all the time. And especially on my Enfield cafe racer. Even L platers (learner riders) on crappy hyosungs and ninjas have to show the "hipster" on the cafe racer how to ride. Until the corners start. Then it's game on :)
