Title: Thinking our loud-oil to the top end
Post by Armen on 05/29/16 at 19:07:14

In dismembering my '96, I noticed the oil jet located between the right engine cover and the crankcase. A bit of head-scratching tells me this is restricting the oil flow to the ass end of the motor.
If memory serves, when I went to Suzuki Service school around 1980, Suzi-Q was doing this sort of thing as a way to restrict the oil flow to parts of their engines. They used a jet, with the logic that if failures in the field pointed to oil starvation in one part of the motor or another, the jet size could easily be changed.
Honda would probably have just done an additional million hours of testing, and decided on the perfect size  ::)
So, since the Savages are known to occasionally munch their top ends, I wonder if playing with the jet size is in order?
A smaller oil jet would divert more oil to the top end. Good news.
A smaller oil jet would allow less oil to the trans shafts. Maybe bad news.
Problem here is that shy of a million hours of destructive dyno testing, the only way to know is to try a smaller jet and ride the bike.
If it turns out the ass end of the motor needed all the oil it had been getting, and now isn't getting enough, the rider could be treated to an anchor seize, and a trip over the handlebars. Not good.
Anyone try screwing with the jet size yet?

Nobody really has any oil related problems...as long as they don't run the bike low (or out)of oil, don't lower the idle speed to the point where the pump can't keep oil flowing, and uses oil with 1,200 ppm of ZDDP.

We have had several members who had been running at high speeds and run the bike out of oil....and that kills the piston/cylinder.  The low idle speed kills the cam bearings/cam journals.  The wrong oil kills the cam lobes and rockers.  And letting the bike idle while sitting on the side stand kills the exhaust rocker and cam lobe - as the engine is leaned over toward the intake rocker, and the low oil flow doesn't provide enough oil to the uphill exhaust cam/rocker.

Dave,
As they say "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

Youzguyz has 150,000 miles on his bike, and the engine has never had the cylinder head removed....original cam/rockers/valves/piston/cylinder/bottom  end.  Use the right oil and change it regularly, pay attention to the oil level, and don't lower your idle speed.....and you won't have any oil related issue.

If anyone has an oil related failure.....it is because they have not yet found the secret to oil happiness that is freely given on this forum :).

(There is also the "oil filter in backwards" failure that can occur).

Oh. My. Goodness.

Wow, that's impressive! Youzguyz's profile avatar now makes so much sense.  :)
