Title: Done!
Post by zipidachimp on 05/25/16 at 20:56:28

Finally, winter work completed, just a few rough edges left.
This bike accelerates like crazy, carb work paid off. Faster than my Vulcan 500 twin.
Hope these photos load!

Wow. That's different! The raised rear end really changes the look. Bet that gets a bit of attention around town. How's the wheelies? 8-)

As you can see, I'm not a designer, but it's the best I could do at this time.
A few observations: in this configuration, the acceleration in 3rd and 4th is scary. I'm 72 and this bike is leading me to 'hooligan behaviour' Ha!
1. The side covers need a redesign, but I'm sorta stumped. (1/16" alum checkerplate)
2. rotated the shift lever lower so I don't have to raise my foot
3. The tank speedo is totally useless, can't see it from the seat.
4. need help wiring the tach
5. carb mods eliminated the backfires
6. the taillight must be from a trailer, I can have a running light or brake light, but not both.
7. my friendly landlord just OK'd me doing some welding. Helloo harbor freight!!!!  A new skill to learn via u-tube
8. when I sell my Vulcan, gonna buy another S40 and do another improved re-design.
Singles Rule!!!!! 8-)

nice lookin ' bike  !   If your taillight is  a double filament and two wires are  coming out you need to run a separate ground from the light houseing back to the frame.

I've watched quite a few welding tutorials. I think I learned a little bit, but mostly I just got jealous of real welders.
Good luck picking up on that. Buy your rods and grinder disks Not from harbor freight.

Hooking up 220 isn't that hard. Scary as heck the first few times.

220v welders are too expensive.  110v flux core is all I will need, on a 20 amp breaker.
The tail light has 3 wires, black, red, white. brown wires from the bike are not connected. The light is a sealed plastic unit 4" dia. Guess I goofed. :-X

Hello Zipi. I just finished posting that I have not done any carb mods cause my bike runs fine and now I read your post that you are running faster than the Vulcan 500. What did you do??? Maybe it is time for me to start making some carb mods? :)

spring:
standard 'suzukisavage.com' mods:
whitespacer mod, 152.5 main jet, 55 pilot, K&N filter, no airbox, crankcase vent out the back of the bike.
midrange acceleration is terrific, and backfires have all but disappeared. Cheers 8-)

Thanks Zipi. I guess if it makes that much of a difference I better read up on it again and plan on doing it soon. I guess I always figured the difference would not be that noticeable, and the afterfire really does not bother me.

Spring,

If you can tell Lancer what your elevation is and any modifications to your bike he will give you a starting point that is really close.

My elevation is about 650' above sea level. I have a Dyna muffler and stock air box.

Lancer advised 52.5 pilot jet, 152.5 main jet and 3 washers. My S40 is running very well with his recommendation.

Nice, Zippy... really nice!...
... but is any work of love ever really done?...
She'll ask for something more...
What?... :-?

forgot to add:  dyna muffler.
Stuff to try next:  lowered front end, lowered seat (current bike has no frame cuts) as the side covers look awkward.
I was thinking of a VM36 carb, but this one works so good, I'll pass. I'm truly amazed at the acceleration.  I won't try the top speed as the traffic here is terrible and the RCMP would probably grab the keys and toss 'em!
I ground the white spacer to 1/3 normal thickness
and wonder if that made the difference?
Sea level here! 8-)
ps: I bolted the rectifier to a chunk of aluminum and bolted that to the frame where the fender used to fasten. in a 'senior moment' I bought a wet-cell battery. Dumb!
Cheers 8-)

With a stock engine.....the stock carb can run just fine when jetted properly.  The VM36 works a bit different - but it does not make a huge difference until you start adding a cam, Wiseco, head porting, etc.  The biggest difference between the 2 carbs is mostly the vacuum operated slide, and the VM carb responds just a bit faster.  The VM carb is also a bit more sensitive to what your throttle hand is doing as you shift gears and as you are decelerating.....it can backfire/pop more frequently and louder if you have not learned how to hold the throttle open just slightly to reduce the noise while you shift or are decelerating.  If you let the throttle snap shut with either carb it will get noisy - but a bit more so with the VM.  You also have to be a bit less aggressive with the VM, and you should not just "crack" the throttle open - but you should roll it open or closed.  The CV carb controls the vacuum for you....with the VM you have to be in control.

If you like the way the bike runs, and it has enough power for you - just ride the darn thing!

Ain't that the whole truth......

As I have shared many times I ride to commute out of necessity.....
As I have to use a ferry to cross water.
The fare is much cheaper, I don't have to wait in the long vehicle lines, etc.
I started with a brand new Rebel, but quickly outgrew its capabilities, as being under powered has safety concerns too!
I bought the S40 straight from its shipping crate, 0 miles.
It has been 4 years and over 20,000 miles of a 26 mile round trip commute......
Other than a belt problem that left me stranded a few days, the bike has answered her call.
I still get guys sitting on their beautiful and costly machines looking at me on the ferry, and I think they are wondering why they didn't buy something more practical and cheaper, as both machines fulfill the same results in commuting.....
