Post by akshooter on 05/23/16 at 10:20:45

I am rebuilding the motor on my savage I got dirt cheap because of a dropped valve well my question is everything I have read or seen is about the oil gear and pin behind the clutch basket that falls out when you take the basket off..ok question is how do you know which way it goes back on if you can't see it before it falls out.. And this will have to be done to replace the cam chain (right) I don't want to ruin the engine can anyone please help..  :-/

Even if you put it up there backwards, it LOOKS like the teeth are engaged, but, not Fully, so, put it on, look at it carefully.
Remove, flip it over, put it on.
Look at how the teeth engage.

There Could be some mark, or, lay it on the table, look at the gear, is the center of it high?
Might be able to decide that way, If you knew more about Why the teeth are not lined up either way the gear is installed.

Just do it both ways and look at the difference.

The pin goes in a hole, no way to get it wrong.
The gear can go either way, but only lines up with the other gear one way.
You can look to see if it lines up, then try and shift it, it does have some play.
The wrong way it come off the gear.
