Title: home done tour pack
Post by Gus on 05/23/16 at 08:24:52

Not completely done. I'm going to put a back pad on the front side. I'd also like to find a chrome rack for the top of the box.

Hurley,as someone here refers to them, made it pretty easy. Any 3 bar rack from the mid 60s to late 70s. Late panhead or shovelhead in the AMF years will work. Here is an example. I'll get a pic of it on the bike tonight.

Sero, the box is a Military Surplus, aluminum, night vision goggles case. I ground the latches off the sides (front &  back on the bike). There are still 4 latches left. Stout for sure.

This wasn't a cheap project but it turned out to be what I wanted; not what someone wanted to sell me. This thing I removable, made of metal and rugged. Just what I was looking for. Gravel roads aren't going T shake this apart.

See!?!?  That's what it's About. Some of this, a little bit of that,  and Yeehaa,,   Waterproof, any bigger would've looked disproportionate,
Did you manage to keep any padding on the inside?

I was very worried about the size before I got it In the mail. I was so afraid it was going to be to big! I think its borderline. But it'll have to do. It actually looked better for size when it was OD green. The Silver makes it look bigger.

Old Sliver is a pack mule now!!![ch55357][ch56844]

It's borderline too big, visually, but the job needs room.
If you could get it to sit lower, maybe pull the slats and just mount to the framework?

Pulling the slats would only gain me 1/4-3/8". Before I go through anything like that I want to go to a bigger tank. Hopefully that will diminish the size of the box. Alter in the color of tbe box is an option too. You'll notice it doesn't look nearly as large in OD. I did put some padding in the base. Some closed cell foam. About 1/2" or so.

I had mounted a trunk to a board then mounted the board to the fender after I relocated the rectumfryer.

The board fit under the loop for the rear seat ('96) and I mounted a piece so it would bolt to the location of the missing rectumfryer.

Very nice. Now all you need are some knobby tires, and two ammo cans forpanniers and people will think you have an Adventure bike

It'd take a boat load of modifications to make old Sliver look like an Adventure bike. Couple more ammo cans ain't going to do it.
I don't like cruisers much. I bought old Sliver be cause he was a thumper and newer tech than most thumpers (cepting dirt bikes). Our markets today don't call for good one cylinder bikes. We Thumper nuts have to do what we can. The S40 is a good economy motorcycle.

Yeah, that should put things in perspective somewhat.
And the color did really change the apparent size.

Good, a metal box is hard on the cargo.

Little better perspective on the rack.

Gus,

what's the white thing under the rack?

That is what is left of the pillion after taking the cover and foam off. The rack will not fit with the full pillion on

Yes it is a 2003. I traded struts with a guy on the west coast. He got the better of the deal. Mine were like new; his not so much but that's another story. Suffice it to say, not everyone on this site is . . .well shall we say . . .forthright.
