Title: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/22/16 at 13:13:24 Does everyone use the stock chrome header pipe ? Or does somebody make aftermarket header pipes for the savage ? Besides what Ryca sells . |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by DesertRat on 05/22/16 at 13:34:37 not quite sure, as I didn't research too deep when I was hunting alternative shorty exhausts, but I think the Suzuki DR650SE header is the same as the Savage LS650 S40 ... You could check out FMF ... but again, not quite sure |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/22/16 at 13:55:30 I sliced mine up and removed the inner pipe and had a guy TIG it together. Not sure if it helped or hurt. If you go with that, be careful about how you slice it up. You want to create a Puzzle that readily assembles the way it was assembled, so the thing is all pointed the same way. |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by LANCER on 05/22/16 at 16:05:11 I don't think the DR will fit but like you I am not quite sure. Where have all my memories gone ? ? ? : |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/22/16 at 16:37:45 Moonshine, Mason jar. What were we talking about? |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by old.indian on 05/22/16 at 16:38:29 I got a 1.75" OD header from Super Thumper that I covered with Heat Wrap. May not be as pretty as chrome, but highly functional ... |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by DesertRat on 05/22/16 at 16:56:11 the DR650SE has a BUNCH of bends in it, I was thinking like a welder/fabricator ... chop cut rebuild welder up ... I "think" the flange and clamp might work, need the ID/OD measurements and the bolt C/L measurements ... or chop your OEM off and weld up to your crazy straw exhaust ... OR fab up one of these - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDafMzo4HO8 |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/22/16 at 17:48:19 I bought a system on fleabay with a 2" o.d. header and a long muffler but it has no markings or numbers on it. Cut the muffler to fit the tracker I'm building rebuilt the baffle & packed it with fiber glass matting , had it bead blasted and then painted it flat black. Turned out pretty good , looks great ! I was just wondering what others are using and what is available for my next project. Going to build another savage after I finish couple other bikes. |

Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Kris01 on 05/22/16 at 19:56:36 Doesn't Raask make a header for this engine? |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/22/16 at 19:59:47 I don't know but I will check on that , Thanks |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Kris01 on 05/22/16 at 20:05:17 http://www.raask.com/ ;) |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/22/16 at 20:15:31 They look good, they're light, and you get discount coupons for hearing aids. |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/22/16 at 20:27:31 Raask is very nice but pricey. Wonder if they just sell the header pipe alone! |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/22/16 at 20:56:10 Whoops! |

The Raask is reported to be very loud by a few folks who have one, or have heard one in person. |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by DesertRat on 05/23/16 at 09:21:18 maybe an inexpensive, beat up eBay purchase hacked up from an 05-09 SUZUKI BOULEVARD S50 ??? |

Woops......didn't read the whole thing again? Are your aware that the chrome part of the Suzuki Savage pipe is not what the exhaust travels through.....there is an inner pipe about 1-1/4" diameter that is inside the chrome pipe (inner and outer pipe). You can't just cut the pipe and re-weld it into a different shape...unless you only use the inner pipe which is not pretty. I am not sure if the same inner/outer pipe method is used on the S50. |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/23/16 at 10:17:56 Think I paid $120 for it. It was new used but not new,had a chipped up black chrome ceramic coating and was marked savage 650 from one of those online cycle salvage places. Was a direct bolt on for the savage. Looked good on a savage but too long for a street tracker. |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by DesertRat on 05/23/16 at 12:02:31 yeah Dave, once you cut that baby up it all falls apart inside and outside. so you basically have 2 systems, one that functions and one that is cosmetic. Which is interesting, didn't someone around here take a grinder/dremel to their exhaust outlet on the head ??? |

Yes....there is a very restrictive aluminum donut at the exit of the exhaust port. Some of that can be cut away....a little bit for a stock engine, and a bit more for a modified engine. |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/23/16 at 12:50:12 Already ported head for that pipe & carb , hope to start it in the next couple of weeks if work slows down a bit ! |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Kris01 on 05/23/16 at 18:11:32 A muffler shop could easily bend a pipe and make you a header. It wouldn't be pretty but it would be functional. If you were going to wrap it in exhaust wrap anyway... ;) |
Title: Re: Exhaust header pipes Post by Ruttly on 05/24/16 at 10:13:44 Ya know I wanted to have like maybe 5 made but want to finish this bike it's been 2 1/2 year project |
