Title: 2014 S40 Fuse Panel - where the heck is it?
Post by youngde811 on 05/21/16 at 20:23:41

So my headlight and front running lights stopped working today. When I turn the ignition to "on" the brake light comes on but the front lights don't. Turn signals work fine. Flashers work fine. No brights, no pass. Bike starts and runs fine.

Dealer service said it could be a fuse. Said the fuse box looked like a small version of a car's and there are spare fuses in it. My manual says the fuse panel is under the seat. Took the seat off and I can't for the life of me find anything that looks like a fuse panel. I do see the main fuse (I think).

Any guidance here would be appreciated. Thanks.

David

the dealer's wrong.
not a fuse panel, more like a box.
look on the right side, there's a white box.
if you look at it I think it says fuse on the end.

Yup, the dealer was indeed wrong. Found it. Thank you.

The fuses look ok. Just to be sure I replaced each one in turn anyway with the spare. No joy. Oh, and the horn doesn't work either.

Where should I start looking? Thanks...

David,

Have you inspected the big connector under neath the fuel tank?

I found the problem. It's in the electrical connection between two ends of a harness that run the headlight, running lights and horn. Worked itself loose as far as I can tell; it's buried in electrical tape. I used a wire tie to secure the harness while giving it enough free play for fork movement.

Now I can ride tomorrow! Thanks to the group.

And KennyG you're right. That's the harness I was investigating. Thanks very much.

David,

There is nothing like hearing of a successful fix on the forum.

Good Luck,

Reinstalling that connector seems to fix a lot of electrical issues. It likes to unplug itself!

A skinny tie wrap run around the connector between the wires coming out each end will keep it closed.

jog has it . i zip tied every one of those connectors on the bike  i used the aircraft 3 tie method . why? cause  2 critical ones came undone and stranded me the oem clip is junk on the newer bikes

Props,

Can you show us a picture of the Aircraft Three Tie method?

If the connector is too long for one, put two together. I'm guessing, but I suspect the third is to secure the assembly. The level of

My dad flew jumpseat (between the pilots) overseas a lot. One night just 30 minutes out of LaGuardia airport in NY the entire instrument panel went dark. There are no lights over the ocean so it was pitch dark. The pilot, who was completely unconcerned, banged his fist on the panel and the lights came back on. Only being 30 minutes out, my dad asked to turn around and head back to the airport to have the electrical problem checked out. The pilots kept flying! I think they were headed to Belgium.

HAHA WOW ^^

Ive had the connection under my gas tank come loose before and the zip-tie idea sounds like good prevention. Never even considered how that coming loose might leave me stranded....
Ive been lurking all over this place.. so many useful tips.. I feel like my bike is going to be nearly invincible once its all back together and running. lol  8-)

I had this issue too, and it was the same issue, where the two wiring harnesses connect. Seems to be a common problem with these bikes. Beware, it was super intermittent. Even though I seem to have it fixed, I test my horn every once and a while when no cars are around to make sure it's still all good.

Thank you! Will take a look at the connector while bike is on the bench - I had the same issue last riding season.

Was coming home late at night and all of a sudden, headlight and running light turned off but engine was still running. Shut engine off turned it back on - no results, smacked the switch few times - everything went back to normal. Week later - same thing, headlight and front running lights would turn off while riding. Chalked it off to a bad light switch but sounds like it's more than that :o

Shoot contact cleaner in the switch, flick it high and low a while.
Have a rag handy and dry off any paint immediately. A bit of wax first would probably not be stupid.

Good afternoon all.  I am a new member with a 2014 Boulevard S40 that I just purchased.  I apologize for reviving an old thread but I have the same problem as the OP.  Where exactly is this connector located, do I have to remove the gas tank to get to it?  If possible could someone direct me to pictures of the plug and its location.  I really do not want to take it to the dealer if it is a simple fix but it has been years since I worked on a bike and I am lost.

Thanks

The fuses are under the seat on the right side.

Don't even have to pull the seat.

The connector is under the gas tank, left side,  in the area above the spark coil ,it's large, holding about 10-11 wires.

Thanks for the help, I found the black plug in question, completely unplugged.  I was able to get it reconnected without removing the tank.  If it happens again, the tank will be pulled and the plugged wire tied.
