Title: Changing to rubber hand grips??
Post by phatmanswingin on 05/19/16 at 07:25:45

I'd like to change my stock grips to rubber grips but since they're like bicycle grips how does one attach the throttle cable or can't it be done?
Also, I'd like to change the bars to the bitwell keystone bars can that be done without replacing the cables? I tried to leave a link to the bars but not sure if it worked. I'm using my phone.
I have a 2002 LS 650 and I'm pretty sure everything is stock. I have the curved bars, NOT the drag bars with the bend risers,  I think those came on later models.
Anyway any,info is much appreciated

pretty much depends on the bars, 8" of rise about 30" wide and cable length starts getting iffy.  Some people can do it others won't.

The stock grip is rubber or it's facsimile over a plastic sleeve.
If you take the rubber off, the sleeve has ribs that engage with the rubber.
And make it impossible for a new grip to be put on without removing the ribs.
Some grips come with a sleeve that may work with the savage.
As far as I know, there are only 2 types.  Get the one that looks like what you have and it should fit... mostly.

I have rubber grips that I was able to get on without filing the ribs off of the throttle... just gotta use a little spit and elbow grease!

These are the ones I have.

As far as changing to the Keystones.
The stock buckhorn (which is what it sounds like you have) bars on your bike have an 8" rise, the regular Keystones have a 5" rise and the Keystone XLs have an 8.5" rise, either are fine with your stock cables. If you do the 5" ones you may need to re route them so they don't stick out too far but that is easy. Also, if you order them be sure to get the 1" handlebars not the 7/8.

Good luck!

Surprisingly....WD40 works very well on rubber grips (not foam ones).

The WD40 allows the grips to slide on easily - then move the trop into into place and let the bike sit overnight....or push it out into the sun.  The WD40 disappears, and the grip sticks incredibly tight.

I was taught the same thing back in the day but to use petrol instead of wd40. Works great and the grips never move.

Thanks Rayven, yes I do have the 8" rise. I too am getting the biltwell rubber grips but I'm gettin the kung fu grip in oxblood. Also, you are correct the keystones are 5" rise. I guess I should have measured b4 I asked  >:(
Thanks for all the tips everyone, I knew this was the place.

Just wanted to say thanks, I got my biltwel grips and they fit like a dream. I also, didn't need to sand down the ribs on the throttle. I used rubbing alcohol as lube and it worked great.

I read "rubber band" grips...  I even Googled it... ;D

Rubber grips slip on just like the stock "whatever you call it" grips...
I have had coke bottle grips for years...

Psst... a little rubbing alcohol in the grip makes it slip on easy, and evaporates in less than a minute...

Ha! Us women gotta keep our fellas in check  ;)

I would still keep an eye out on craigslist, and for local swap meets! I've seen quite a few of those floating around for cheaper than new...it's easy to justify when they cost half the price! Women always love a good deal  ;D
