Title: Is there anybody out there?
Post by Doug B on 05/18/16 at 06:50:35

A thought from Floyd(Pink - that is)       How bout when it comes to our bikes?      I still have not seen another Savage/LS/S40 - and I've been looking since I got mine    and(as we all know) since it hasn't changed it's appearance from it's inception 30 years ago - you'd think I might've had a sighting by now    hell maybe Bigfoot and UFO sightings are more common?    Are some of you experiencing the same thing(with either a Suzuki or creatures/aliens)?

the whole tome I owned my S40 I saw 2 others, aside from trips with forum members
I think a lot of S40s / Savages are sitting in the garages of folks who bought them as beginner bikes and then lost interest

I've seen 3 or 4 in the 2 years I've owned mine.  But, yeah, not the most prolific bike compared to the super fast or super big bikes.

I spotted a fellow student riding an S40 to school a few weeks back, I was right behind him in my truck. It was 100°F plus that day and I wasn't willing to give up my A/C.

There are a couple of new ones in the showrooms of two nearby dealers, and they pop up on Craigslist here now and then, but I have yet to see one other than mine on the road.

Harleys however are thick as fleas 'round here. A young man I know bought a Triumph Rocketlll at the beginning of last summer because, he said, "Harleys are like a*sholes - everybody's got one. I want something different !"

Yup, kids at school either ride rice burners or Triumphs, nothing in-between. The older riders in the parking lots are either on metric or harley cruisers, nothing in-bewteen.

WEIRD ...  :o

I've not seen any in these parts on the road. Not even on CL! But then I can go on an afternoon ride for 100-150 miles and not see 1 motorcycle in these parts.
Lotsa Hogs riding around town but I don't frequent town much; unless I'm going to work or need gas.

In the Cincinnati area.....I see 1 or 2 a summer.

About half are owned by women, the other half by older men.....every now and then I see a younger guys who got it as his learner bike.

The bikes I see on the street are mostly stock - if I go to a show I might see one as a bobber.

Craigslist has a steady supply, about 20% are older bikes and they have been bobbed/ratted - but I never see them being ridden.

Very few in the UK. I've only ever seen one other here.
They seem popular in mainland Europe though, especially Germany and Hungary.

Similar story with the Yamaha SR and XT 500 thumpers, they were discontinued in the UK but Europe has plenty of them :(

Loads of "Hardly Able, son"s here, though.
Very nice but not for me.

Motorcycle size and displacement, like pickup size and distance between the floor and the pavement, is in direct proportion to the owner's self esteem and the image they wish to project.  ;)

500s and 650s were considered large bikes at one time.  But, since the advent of electric starters displacement has grown.  (Can you imaging trying to kick start a 100+ cubic inches of high compression twin ???)

I saw one on the highway once and almost broke my neck to turn and get a look. I got really excited!  ;D

S40 nerd? Yeah, maybe!  ;D

In the last 15 years, I've seen about three..

I've seen 8 or so in the area. Not counting my pair of them, Lancer, MMRanch or Verslagen's visit.

There is a stack of them still in the shipping cages rotting away behind a local dealership. Owner despises the model, is forced to accept 2 per year. Stashes them out back hoping the scrappers steal them. Parts counter not allowed to sell any new parts for the model either.

Two or three years ago on this forum I asked if anyone had data on production numbers, but no one did. Maybe there are fewer out there than I would've guessed? I bet(although they might not admit it) that some on this forum may have seen a sasquatch or a gray. Up here in Washington state I know people who have claimed to(at least the big hairy guys).   :-X :-X :-X
