Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/16/16 at 07:23:07 could be these numbers: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1147536807/0#0 but then you get this $#it: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1379376575/14#14 there's got to be an OEM support that functions ... |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by verslagen1 on 05/16/16 at 08:44:54 These are known issues. You might not have them if you use stock tires. Even without the supports some have issues with some tires and the stock bolts. You can do several things. 1. use button head bolts in place of the stock bolts. 2. mount the support between the fender and rail rather than inside the fender. 3. some aftermarket supports mount on the front 2 bolts from the outside. |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/16/16 at 09:13:02 found a pair from a different model suzuki, may need to bend to fit between rail and fender... or possibly mount on the OUTSIDE ... |

Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/16/16 at 09:42:52 ordered 2 different sets, will try both ... got plenty of 5# and 10# hammers ... ordered this set: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/30wAAOSw7aBVEaX2/s-l500.jpg and this set: |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by KennyG on 05/16/16 at 10:34:50 Rat, Unless you have an awfully narrow rear tire the set in the bottom picture is going to rub. How is the speedometer project coming along? Kenny G |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/16/16 at 10:44:02 Kenny, the bottom set will definitely have to be mounted on the outside of the rail. They came off a vl800 and they mount outside along the curved passenger pillion footpegs and rail. The speedo is on hold, Im waiting on a complete vs700 front-end to come in ... got a nice deal I couldn't pass up ... I do have an update, the upper triple tree needs to either be cut/notched for the speedo swap or the whole triple tree needs to be swapped out for a VS tree ... OR I need to fabricate a mount extension for the speedo to reach the rear 2 bolts on the tree ... all of which take time and $$$ ... I got time, but no $$$ ... |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by stewmills on 05/16/16 at 15:05:40 Not sure what your bags are like, but I made my own supports because my stock ones were not conducive to my new hard mount bags. The first image is the mock-up, the second image from the underside is the finished product. Sorry, I was in a hurry and failed to take pictures of the completed brackets before the final install. Rode about 550 miles this weekend at the Dragon and it worked perfectly. No issues. |

Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by LANCER on 05/16/16 at 16:01:17 I got a virtually new set of the hardware and the bags off eBay for $100 a couple of weeks ago. It was a nice deal. 8-) |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/17/16 at 07:57:55 yeah Lancer, I've been on the hunt for a deal ... looking for really slim bags, the larger ones don't really appeal to me, aesthetically, on our smaller bikes ... |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by Art Webb on 05/17/16 at 08:04:38 stock Boulevard bags are slim so slim I found them ot very usefull to me (I carry lots of stuff) no slanted, though |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/17/16 at 08:44:19 I like the slimmer bags, but like you, the lack of aesthetic fitment (not slanted to fit around shocks) doesn't appeal to me ... http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/9qUAAOSwT6pV5f6y/s-l500.jpg |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by Tocsik on 05/17/16 at 09:39:56 Mutazu has some hard bags that are a nice fit on our bike. http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k548/Tocsik87/S40/33eea7de-ec56-41ea-9b40-9af01003aaf6_zpsqqmzjhud.jpg (http://s1115.photobucket.com/user/Tocsik87/media/S40/33eea7de-ec56-41ea-9b40-9af01003aaf6_zpsqqmzjhud.jpg.html) http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k548/Tocsik87/S40/s40%20by%20lake%203_zpszsqibxv4.jpg (http://s1115.photobucket.com/user/Tocsik87/media/S40/s40%20by%20lake%203_zpszsqibxv4.jpg.html) |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/17/16 at 12:42:16 hey Tocsik, do you have a shot that is straight on the left and right sides? I'd like to see how they fit along the shocks |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by Art Webb on 05/17/16 at 21:03:34 I've seen those in person...on Neil's bike, I thought they looked good |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/18/16 at 09:50:46 ~~~UPDATE~~~ this set will work, by drilling into the rail. They'll look nice, BUT you lose the helmet lock. :( Back on the hunt! http://suzukisavage.com/yabb2.2/Attachments/s-l1600_002.jpg |

Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/18/16 at 12:33:19 they look great ... may go that route ... thanks for the images ... |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by Tocsik on 05/18/16 at 12:52:25 They're not the sturdiest but they do lock; enough for peace of mind and a mild deterrent. I have them reinforced with sheet metal and mounted directly to the fender (no chrome side rails) to keep them in closer to the bike. |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/18/16 at 16:23:54 Tocsik, how do the lids lift? Towards the front/rear or center? |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by Tocsik on 05/18/16 at 16:44:01 They open at the back and swing toward the front. $99 GA bag from these guys: http://www.mutazu.com/ (http://www.mutazu.com/products.php?cat_id=7&menu=Hard%20Saddlebags&product_id=544&s=prod.php) They have others that open on the side, some with lights (dim LED's) etc. I saw a pic on the forum of another bike with 'em and thought they were the perfect size and I was looking for something lockable. They were certainly cheap enough to take the risk and throw a few extra bucks for reinforcing. I Googled reviews and most guys reinforce with sheet metal. I've redone the mounts; added a thicker bar inside across the top and removed the rubber grommets. I can fit a fair amount inside; even my armored MC jacket folded up on hot days. All the various gloves needed for riding in Denver, tools, rags, lunch... Definitely not solid like fiberglass. They are ABS plastic but again, cheap to buy and play with. |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/18/16 at 20:04:37 thanks again Tocsik ... I'll do some research ... |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by DesertRat on 05/19/16 at 18:45:26 this style is SWEET ... clears the rear signals too ... http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/PokAAOxydUJTPMw8/s-l1600.jpg http://i.ebayimg.com/images/a/(KGrHqN,!i8E6PgNZ,J+BOtkBU3VVQ~~/s-l1600.jpg http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ODoAAOxyjxlTPMw6/s-l1600.jpg |
Title: Re: saddlebag supports Post by Jayden22 on 05/23/16 at 15:14:10 Hi Tocsik - Thanks for posting the pics. I'm new to the forum and the bike. It looks like I have the same exact year/color as you and I have been thinking of adding the hard bags as well. Do you feel like you would go with one of the more pricier options after you received the GA bags? I noticed you said they weren't that solid and you had to reinforce them. I would like to store a half helmet for my impromptu passengers and rain gear. Thanks! |
