Title: Chain conversions - Primary as Final Drive ???
Post by DesertRat on 05/14/16 at 10:37:02

Watching some car show tv thing and spotted a guy building a custom HD hardtail, and he installed what looked like a primary as a final drive chain.

It was a WIDE monster chain and sprocket set ... looked cool  8-)

anyone ever run a primary as a final drive?

I'm not understanding what the purpose of this is. Are you wanting a different ratio or just "the look"?

the builder didn't change the ratios in the conversion, just the WIDTH of the sprockets and chain ...

looked like he took an HD primary chain and modded it for final drive instead ...

With that much weight, it would be like running 44" mud tires!  ;D

A double strand chain has got to weigh a ton!

thanks for the link Justin ... found some decent priced chain, BUT ...

what are the specs for the chain we use for the savage conversion?

:)

That's around 8 lbs for our bike!  :o

My 2 cents worth. This double row chain reminds me of my old Datsun 510 timing chain. That monstrous 1600cc Overhead Cam Engine rated at 96 HP and 100 ft lbs of torque @5600rpm! WOW!! :o

I had a 1987 Nissan p/u with about the same power ratings but 800cc larger!

Put the chain back on the sprocket.

I thought you wanted to build your bike like a Board Track bike?  I don't see how a double row primary chain as a final drive chain fits into that scheme.

Aren't primary chains running in oil?   How does running without oil affect the chain life?

Are you building a static show bike......or something you can put miles on regularly?

Yes, they are but a chain is a chain. Just keep it lubed like a regular mc chain.

Title: Re: Chain conversions - Primary as Final Drive ???
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/15/16 at 15:26:04

An o ring chain is designed to be exposed. Oil bath chain won't survive the same environment as long.
Can oring double chain be found? Maybe. But why go through the addition cost and engineering challenges? A single drive chain has been shown to work fine.

check out the early motorcycles/boardtrackers ... some ran DUAL belts and others ran DUAL chains and a majority just ran a single belt or single chain ...

I was looking to do something different ... trying to avoid the sea of sameness ... in the parking lot ...

It looks like it is made from Duck, French Fries, something yellow like Tofu, and some gravy.

Not sure why you would make that intentionally - however I could believe that dish could be assembled in the bin where you dump the food scraps.

I can't see me looking at that and grabbing a fork. I do still have a coupla air sicknesses bags I took from TTA when I was a kid. That's Trans Texas Airways, commonly called TreeTop Airlines.
I can see grabbing one of those and using it.
I don't have a weak stomach, either.
I can harf across a four lane road.
The problems with these bags are
Volumetric deficiency

Ray, that is code for
Not big enough. But, you're probably used to hearing that.

And
Just not rugged enough.
They were built prior ( that's before  ) to the development of Kevlar.

Is it OK to quote yourself? :-?

I do believe I have eaten everything contained in that dish - just not in the same dish at the same time.

Yes, but it doesn't look quite as crazy if you refer to yourself in third person following the quote.

Yeah, looks way too much like something that would get hauled up, out of the garbage disposal after it jammed.

I'll stay with the Bultaco! I can't eat something that looks like barf!

I've heard of that before but never have eaten it. Judging by the name, it must be a French delicacy.

I'd try it at least once.

When I was in basic, our day at the range started at 04:00 and we had "b" rats that came with a 4 sigs in it and matches.
Had a little mini box they came in, neat...um, that's when I started smoking :)
While in Okinawa we had "c" rats when storm season came and we were on lockdown.
I have saved 3 different color MRE packs to (dark green[almost black], olive drab, and desert tan)
I showed my son how to make an MRE bomb with the heat packs in them  ;D ;D ::) 8-)

It looks like the builder changed out the chain for a single/normal either during or after, there was a point during filming when he had a dual on there  ...
