Title: Ape hanger safety
Post by Graven754 on 05/09/16 at 17:49:58

Is it unsafe to ride with 12 inch apes on your savage? I've been told that it's unsafe.

12"s aren’t that tall...
I'm not a fan, but I see no safety issues...
If you like the look, give it a go... just make sure your cabling isn't stressed or binding...
8-)

I had a Kawasaki 750 twin, it had buckhorns, I ditched them for some pretty straight bars. Much better handling. I have never seen anyone racing using ape hangers. I want Control. Looks don't mean hoot to me. Getting through a corner, through traffic, past a hazard, being able to make it hop from one lane to another with just a quick shove on the bars, that's what I call cool...

Apes are for comfort, not racing.  I sat on my bike, closed my eyes, put my hand to where they should be.  Opened my eyes, figured where the handlebars wanted to be, got bars to fit.  For me, an 10" mini-ape, with 1 1/4" chopped off each end.  Very comfortable.  Being comfortable means safer.

I've seen big bikes, big apes, and they did okay with it. It's not for me. I push it.

How tall an ape is 'safe' depends on the rider
Paladin describes what, to me, is the best way to select bars for a bike, but here's the question
will 12" apes put your hands above your shoulders? that'd be less controlable than below the shoulders, though I've seen some riders whao can ride like that
Oldfeller uses the stock buckhorns and he's hard to keep up with
I can't stay with him through curves at all

For normal cruising, casual riding, etc., apehangers most likely aren't going to get you hurt.

They are not the ideal handlebar when it becomes necessary to brake really hard, make evasive maneuvers, or need to hold on when you happen on some really rough riding (on or off road).

My handlebars that I ordered also don't have the knot he's cut into them where the risers go onto the bars. That's supposed to add extra grip right so the bars won't slip In the risers?

I think your concerns are legitimate. You can test your new bars to see if they will stay where you want them. If not, depending on skill level and tools, you can pin them in place. Future changes would leave you with a bit to deal with.
I thought the buckhorns looked like a comfortable position, but I am not the one with the shoulders and wrists or the
Burned into the psyche mental image of a character from a movie. Personally, I think you cut a right striking image of a cool chick on a bike,  with the stock bars. Yeah, pretty dang sure...
I'm just  an ol guy, but I still have eyes.
