Title: cam chain wear..
Post by badwolf on 05/08/16 at 17:45:30

At 11k I checked my cam chain tensoner and it was out to 18mm. I modded the plunger to add another hole 15mm out and reassembled everything and had 3mm extension. Fine.
Today with another 10k on it I thought to check it while changing the oil & filter. It was out to 5mm.
Out to 18mm in the first 11k, and only 2mm more in the next 10k.
Now I bought the bike with 5k on it, and I geared it up much higher than stock, and I ride mostly long easy miles seldom taking it over 1/2 throttle or 4k. It only runs 3400 at 60 mph, not the stock 4100. But there must be a lot of settleing-in wear before the chain gets ''wore-in'', or the first owner must have beat the hell out of it!
Have any of you kept track of the cam chain wear new as compared to ''broken-in''?
How many miles do you get after the tensioner mod before the chain is shot?
I know after the plunger is out to 18mm again it's time for a new chain, but I think I'm good for another 10k before I check again.
Any comments?

I believe the plunger is out pretty far when the bike is new.  I took my bike apart with 1,200 miles on it, and the plunger was out 15mm.

Wow, 15mm almost new, and they basically explode when they hit 20mm? I don't think that part of the bike was too well thought out.

Ain't that an understatement!

Thanks for taking the time to document that. Good work.

I just looked through an old post.....the plunger was at 14mm wihen the bike had 1,200 miles on it.  I bought it from a woman who was learning to ride and had only put 262 miles on the bike, and I put the other 1,000 miles on it.

I just wanna say that I am extremely happy that you are not my doctor. I would hate to go in for a checkup and have him bust me open and inspect the valves in my heart.
That Said, the documentation you're doing is helpful and downright interesting. Great thread, thank you.
