Title: Lectron Carburetor
Post by KennyG on 05/08/16 at 09:44:58

Has anyone on the forum had any experience with the Lectron Carburetor?

Also, anyone have experience with Lancer's 36mm Mikuni Carburetor?

Kris,

Thanks.

I have spoken to Lancer and Super Thumper and cannot make up my mind if I want to try a Lectron or a 38mm Mikuni.

What mods are done or planning to do?
If you are sure you're gonna change, do you have sufficient skills to get a carb dialed in without any help? If you go with the mikuni at least you have local support.

Justin,

The only mod that I have engine wise is a Dyna muffler with one 1/4" hole drilled in the baffle.

I can get the carb dialed in but I hate removing the seat, tank and battery to do it.

I would like the guy that sells the Lectron to make a manifold that sets the carburetor out on an angle like on a BSA Gold Star. With the Gold Star setup you can work on the carb with out removing it from the engine.

KennyG.

Are you sure you want a 38mm Mikuni?

I have the 36mm that I got from Lancer, and it is plenty of carb for the Savage engine.  When you go to a bigger carb, they can't control the fuel/air mixture as well at low throttle settings, and that is where you most likely ride the Savage anyhow.

You might want a 38mm if you got the big piston, big cam, free flowing exhaust, etc.  But for a mostly stock engine the 36mm is probably a better size.

Dave,

I will go back and try to correct that post. I was thinking it is a 38mm Mikuni that Lancer sells, but I am sure you are correct and it is a 36mm.

The Lectron that Super Thumper sells is a 38mm.

I do not have any personal experience with the Lectron carburetor, but from what I have read and the experience I have with the Edelbrock Quicksilver (a similar type carb) I would expect it to work well.
My only issue with it, as with many carbs today, is the cost factor.
Many carbs will work well but the VM is less expensive and that is why I chose it.  Jets are pretty easy to get and are relatively cheap.
So it just depends on what floats your boat, really.

Lancer,

I have not yet made up my mind one way or another. When I do I will telephone you again.

With your VM carburetor can I still use the Suzuki air box and filter?

Does the 1/4" hole make a big difference sound wise? You drilled it right in the middle I assume?

Title: Re: Lectron Carburetor
Post by KennyG on 05/18/16 at 18:14:46

Trooper,

I think the 1/4" hole makes just enough noise to make it sound like an old time thumper. Also, the hole leaves a little heat out of the exhaust to help with the after firing

I have a pic of the gadget that I used to get the whole centered in the baffle. It is a common drill extension that I purchased many years ago, the black pieces are 1 1/4" dowel. Put a little grease in the holes in the dowel and wrap tape around the extension to keep the dowels from walking back on the extension.

If the muffler is off of the bike and you stand it on end to drill the hole you probably don't need the dowels because you can see down inside the muffler with a bright light.

Hmmmm. Does the hole have any negative effect? Mine runs great, but I could go for a bit louder

Post by KennyG on 05/18/16 at 21:15:41

Stew,

So far the effects of the 1/4" diameter hole in the Dyna muffler have been all positive. The sound is really close to what my Gold Stars sounded like a half century ago, if I remember correctly.

I think this modification has lessened the after fire and some of the popping.

My immediate thought is to drill the second hole, but I am bot going to do it.

What kind of muffler did you have on your Goldstar before ?

Mine was a fully open reverse cone megaphone.

Lancer,

The factory muffler on all of my Gold Stars was a tapered muffler shaped like a reverse cone muffler with a pea shooter end like the Triumph mufflers.

I don't have a working scanner at the moment or I would post a picture.

The best after market mufflers in that era of time were Dunstall mufflers.

The Dunstall sounded good but was probably in the 100 decibel  range.

Yep the D's were a nice muffler, but for a hard core Goldstar taken straight from the track, I sure did like that open R-cone.
The sound was just awesome !

Title: Re: Lectron Carburetor
Post by KennyG on 05/20/16 at 18:01:05

Lancer,

Reverse cones were always the best looking mufflers.

The Dunstall mufflers made for a BMW made the BMW sound awesome. We never think of a BMW as sounding good, but with the Dunstall mufflers they made more noise when leaving up on the gas than they did with full throttle.

I had a BMW one season owned by Butler & Smith and I loved the sound of it, but it wasn't very fast though.

On the track I usually had a reverse cone about like the muffler you describe on your Gold Star.

I would like to have an up swept reverse cone muffler on my S40 that would look like the Norton exhaust.

This is a really close example of the size/shape of the R-C megaphone I had.
The first one in the photo; short with a wider opening in back.
I believe my header had a 1.5" ID and was about 30-32" long.

Post by KennyG on 05/21/16 at 20:48:33

Lancer,

I think the half mile racers almost always used that muffler and header.

I know they had a distinct sound. Usually you would get to hear Richard Mann because he would be in front of everyone else. Who in the h3ll decided that Dlck was a bad word?

The Norton that I used in Steeple Chase for one summer had a crossover 2 into 1 exhaust pipe with a  megaphone, like the one standing up on the left. That was one of the fastest Nortons that I have ever ridden.

A lot of exhaust and intake tuning was attempted in those days but never tested on a dynamometer, which were far and few between. If you were leading the pack you had a good tuner.

Title: Re: Lectron Carburetor
Post by LANCER on 05/22/16 at 03:23:59

Yep, that is the same one I had...standing on the left.
The way I heard was that the tuners back then, the really good ones, tuned the engine by the sound it made when running on the track, and by the smell of it...they could tell if it was running lean or rich and whether it was in the low,mid or high range.
I would give a lot to spend some time with someone like that.

Title: Re: Lectron Carburetor
Post by KennyG on 05/22/16 at 08:41:10

Lancer, There were some really good old time tuners.

My fiend Marion Cameron was hard of hearing, but if he rode behind me going up hill he could tell me what jetting I need. And then the son of gun would pass me like a bat out of h!ll going down the next hill.

The old guys didn't have dynos or oxygen sensors and most of the carburetors were pretty lousy.

My friend Enos Hoffer could tune a 1960 Sportster to run 1/4 mile times that are still standing over a half century later. Enos just passed away a couple of weeks ago. I am pretty sure the only job he ever had, besides the Army, was at Lancaster Harley Davidson in Lancaster, PA.

Eddie Fisher who had the AMA #1 Tag back in the late fifties opened up a home in Shunk, PA for the old motorcycle guys to finish out there last years.

Remember the hillbilly song "Where have all our heros gone?"

I get tears in my eyes thinking about all the really good motorcyclists that I have known.

Justin,

Did you know Eddie?

Watching him win at Laconia, where he sewed up the points for the Number 1 Tag, was something one can never forget.

He was a prince of a guy. His son Gary was briefly mentioned in the movie On Any Sunday.

I only knew Of him,but when I hear about the selflessness of someone, it matters. I'm glad you posted that. Pretty much the high point of my day, save for sitting on the porch, watching birds on the feeder. They Do love some black sunflahr seeds.

My Friend Marion Cameron was one the guys that went to Eddie's place to finish out the ride. I regret never having taken the time to go see who all was staying there.

I am not without regrets.

We all have regrets of assorted types, and many are pretty close to home, if not in the home.

I wish I was clever enough to figure how to install a megaphone cocked up on an angle like a Norton Exhaust on my S40...

That would be the "in" look....

Go to a local muffler shop and have them make what you want.
Besides, they are pretty cheap compared to motorcycle shops and aftermarket companies that make stuff for bikes.

Title: Re: Lectron Carburetor

Lancer,

I guess I should buy the megaphone and take it and the S40 to the muffler shop and see what they can do.

I will give it a try.

Thanks

As far as piping, it should be doable, but how would you actually mount the muffler?

Title: Re: Lectron Carburetor

That is the part I don't know.

The muffler shop in town is good enough to have driven all the big name franchises out of business so I am hoping Bobby Gentry can figure it out for me.

I would much rather take a drawering into him for fabrication.

Having been a small business man most of my life it is good to see the small shop, with superior workmanship, clobber the big guy for a change.

At most big companies, you're just another customer. At least with the few smaller companies I've dealt with you get personal service and you leave feeling like someone actually cared about your business and not just your money! That will make or break a company!  ;)
