Title: Crabby Old Guy rant
Post by Dave on 05/06/16 at 13:01:59

Last night I was a few minutes early for the dinner with my old biker buddies - so I stopped by Beechmont Motorsports to see if I could find a Power Port so I can plug my cell phone/GPS on my bike. They didn't have one that would work on my bike - but I did see a Cramp Buster that I could use to make the throttle a bit easier to hold on long trips.....it was $ 12.99 and they would add some taxes.  I took the package to the parts counter, the guy behind the counter punched some buttons on his computer screen, and told me it was $ 13.83.  I laid $ 14 on the counter, and he ask me if I was in the "system", and I told him I wasn't.  He asked my name....I told him it was Cash.  He told me he needed to enter my name/address into the system to complete the sale.  I really didn't want to be in their "database" and start getting mail and emails because I bought a $ 14 accessory from them - so I took my $ 14 back, put the part back on the rack....and I left.

I don't need to give out my name/address to most retail businesses - and I find it objectionable that a bike shop can't sell me a $ 14 accessory without knowing my name/address.  As far as I know....background checks are not yet required to buy motorcycle accessories!

Good for you!  If enough people turn around and walk out then maybe they'll get smart and quit asking.  I do the same thing, usually they say OK and finish the sale.  They probably see my face starting to turn red as my blood heats up to a boil.

Well... I must admit, once they asked for my SSN to join a discount club.
I said no.
They said make up a number.
I said no.
They gave me the discount anyway.
I said yes thank you.

I guess I'm a cranky old fart also. I do not like it when they do that. I do not like green eggs and ham.

A friend of mine would always give her name as Eunice Quattlebaum as restaurants. She just liked to hear that name over the loud speaker when they announced her table was ready. I think she found it in the phone book. You don't have to give factual info for trivial things!  ;)

That's hilarious Dave! I doubt that the kids working in the restaurants have even heard of the Donner party.

Interesting fact re the Donner party
According to some accounts there were some Native Americans nearby, but they offered no help, as they thought the folks eating each other were insane
Apparently they were surrounded by wild edibles, but were too civilized to know it

No problem !

Your new SSN is 721-07-1426 and your name is Clinton Lester Booker.

Smile, you're on Wikipedia !  :D

My old tel. no. from fall Church, Va., waaay back 1968-1973 was 703-532-8423.
Heaven knows if it still exists !

Feel happy to use them !  :D

Once upon a time when I worked retail we had a system that required such info. We never used it for anything but it still needed the info for whatever reason.

If someone didn't want to give their info we didn't cause a scene we just typed in some random garbeldy gook so the screen would go away.

The only time we actually needed real info was if someone was paying with a check, and in order for our system to allow the check to be processed it needed a verified birthday, address and ID number.
