Title: Wiring Nail Board Dimensions
Post by greenmonster on 05/05/16 at 12:38:23

Hey all,

I am getting annoyed with chasing down electrical gremlins in my thirty year old bike. So I thought I might completely replace the wiring. I have found a number of wiring diagrams, I was wondering if anyone has a wiring nail board though. Just looking to have all the wires cut to the right length before I start.

Regards,

GM

A Nail Board so you can make your own wiring harness?  I don't know of anyone that has ever done that for a Savage.

If your bike is 30 years old...it is a 1986 model, and unfortunately the OEM harness is no longer listed in the parts list.  The harness and electrical system is quite a bit different than the later models.

What kind of electrical gremlins are you having?

86 with a 97 engine.

My current electrical gremlins are:
1. the starter doesn't spin when I hit the start button.
2. all but the rear right signal lights do not work. Right front doesn't even come on. Lefts are on but don't blink.
3. Horn doesn't work. I tested the horn directly, and know that the horn itself works. (scared the stuffing out of the cat testing that)

Yikes, that is a lot of stuff to chase down.

Does the bike get a lot of wet conditions....stored outside?

It sounds like a lot of your connectors are corroded and not making good connections anymore.  The only thing I can suggest is taking the connectors apart and cleaning the terminals.  Then apply a dialectric grease to protect the terminals from further corrosion.

There is a fellow parting out a 97 bike in the Marketplace....maybe you should try and make a deal to get the entire electrical system from him....switches, controls, wiring harness, etc.  You could then update your 86 wiring to a later model harness - and you can eliminate the clutch/sidestand safety switches if you want to simplify the system and make it potentially more reliable.

Heh heh, I live in on the Wet Coast and daily commute on my bike. You could say that it is exposed to wet conditions  ;D On the plus side, I do have sheltered parking, both at home and at work. I was thinking of making a new wiring harness with waterproof connections, that's why I was looking for nail board dimensions.

I have already taken out the side stand safety. I am wondering if the clutch safety is the real problem with my starter.

Thanks for pointing out the 97 in the marketplace, I rarely go over there. Spend most of my time in RSD and Tech.

Signal on, no blink
I would think blinker.
You can run wires parallel to the harness. Disconnect the suspect wire, run a wire.

Wiring Nail Board dimensions should be fairly straight forward:

measure from the headlight to the tail light

measure from the bottom of the left frame next to the kick stand and foot peg over across the top of the tank to the bottom of the frame next to the right side foot peg.

take these measurements and make your board... note that it will be approximately 68" x 68" square ...

Hi DesertRat,
I was meaning the dimensions that I'd need for each of the wires.

If I do end up completely rewiring, I'll see what I can do about recording the dims and posting them here.
