Title: Cracked Speedometer Cover
Post by oram on 05/03/16 at 08:57:50

Hi Guys,

So like an idiot, I had my first spill on the weekend and dropped my bike. Damage isn't too bad - I took the worse part of the fall.

Anyhow, I have a 2006 s40. My speedo cover is now cracked. I'm thinking about replacing it.

Here are two ads on ebay. Will the 2015 and 2003 model both work for my 2006?

Thanks guys!

I busted more stuff up, but I'll save that talk for another thread.

What a perfect time to address the occasional speedometer squeak.

Ram,

Post what you need on the Marketplace.

Most of the guys that have done a Ryca conversion will have the speedometer cover sitting around in a junk box and would probably sell it to you. Some of the other stuff you need will also be available.

my firs drop of mt S40 nailed the right rear blinker
A forum (versy? dave? I disremember) member sold me a pair for less than what 1 new one cost
then I took out the left one next time i dropped it  ;D

I also busted my rear right turning signal, so I hopped on fee-bay and ordered up these guys

Anyone have any thoughts / advice on these babies?

Yes, they don't have reflectors, they are not DOT approved, and they won't be nearly as bright or visible as the stock ones.

They also will not bolt into the stock location - so you will have to figure out a way to get them mounted.

you will have to MOD some kind of mounting for those. The posts are TOO SHORT ... look for post like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aluminum-Dual-Filament-Amber-Turn-Signals-Winkers-Lights-12-Volt-Black-Amber-/171367216967?fits=Make%3ASuzuki&hash=item27e6483747:g:Xt4AAOSw1XdUW8zc&vxp=mtr

you can pull the bulb mount and wiring out to cut down the shaft if it's too long, then re-install wiring and bulb mount.

the post length on these may be a better fit ... *please note that I have NOT tried these, so YMMV ...

I have almost the exact same turn signals you posted there Oram, it does take a little fabrication to make them work with the stock mounts but it is possible...Mine are pretty bright and I have had no issues with them. I didn't connect them as running lights however just turn signals.

Had them on front and back before I tore her apart.

Well, now I feel really dumb for not asking before I bought. What kind of extra modding are we talking about here?

Would it make more sense to buy this and strap it to the shocks? And just pull the side rails?

Possibly, I can't really say. The signals I got did have the longer posts on the ends so those ones you posted may be better off with the shock mounts...

The rear signals I got required far less ingenuity for mounting than the front ones. I just added a washer and a lock washer to both and tightened it up to the rail mounts, but here is the kicker...I "shoved" some nuts in between the end of the turn signal bolt and the fender (didn't thread them, they were a little offset to create a gap) to keep the turn signal wires from being pinched between them. Wasn't that complicated, wasn't that pretty (if you looked REALLY close, otherwise you'd never know) but it worked. I rode them like that for almost year and only took them off because I started building.

I busted and repaired my signals so many times I stopped counting. Devcon five minute epoxy, piano wire, dremel,

What if I pulled the side rails off completely, would the post on the ones i have in the mail be able to work for the time being? Would I then feed the wires through the hole where brake/tail light comes from?

I don't care about having a few ugly holes in the fender.

Thanks again for helping a newb.

Are there holes in your fender where the turn signals mount? It's been so long since I did mine I can't remember...
If there are holes on there they may be too large, you could maybe find some large washers to help bridge that gap, that way you would be able to tighten them on there...
It's hard for me to say without seeing it all in front of me.

I honestly wouldn't worry yourself too much about all of this. Once you get it done you'll realize it wasn't so bad! I'm a newb too, but usually too stubborn to ask for help  ;D
If you need some help once you get the signals, send me a pm with some pictures, I'd be happy to help talk you through things if you're having any trouble!

Quote:

the ONLY ones I have tried on my bike personally are these:

K&S Technologies 25-3231
and
K&S Technologies 25-3232

these will work without modifications, they are made specifically for our bikes as a direct replacement.
I have them on my bike right now.
You need BOTH, one is a left and one is a right and they will work for both front and rear signals ...

all the other aftermarket lights in this thread REQUIRE modifications, either to the mounts or the rails or the wiring or gawd knows what other mods need to be done ...

Thanks DesertRat.

My motivation right now is to get back on the road. Since the turn signals I ordered online are soon to arrive, I'll likely try to get them mounted until I figure out a longer term solution.

Current thinking now is to remove the side rails and mount the lights much like Greg did in the handyman manual to what I assume is his "reworked" rear fender (see attachment).

I also have the oversized 140/90-15 tire which came with the bike. So I'm a tad concerned that the wires will make contact with the tire. I'm 215 lbs with the shocks set to the stiffest setting. I'm assuming the best choice would be to attempt to route the wires via the brake light hole.

Finally, I may end up purchasing the "Universal Flasher Relocator Bar" as described by youzguyz in http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1407255954. This would allow me to put the rails back on at least and avoid the unsightly bolt holes. I'm guessing I might need to extend the wires on the lights, but I'm OK with a soldering iron. What gauge is the wiring? 14, 16, or 18?

I'm not disagreeing about points raised concerning the safety of these lights, I just really want to be able to drive to and from work when the sun is shining.

Thanks again everyone for the help. Please point out any problems with my current plan.

Upon further consideration, I now feel it may be the right choice to get the aftermarket OEM replacement as suggested by DesertRat. It is my right rear signal which was crushed. Can anyone please confirm that the following link will replace the rear right:

K&S Technologies 25-3232 http://goo.gl/mxYc1k

My understand is that this would fit both Front Left (3 wires used) and Rear Right (2 of 3 wires used).

I will order once I find out if you gurus approve. Thanks.

Right, I understand that you have them installed. Cool pics. I just wanted to make sure that it is indeed K&S Technologies 25-3232 http://goo.gl/mxYc1k
that I need to buy for the rear right turn signal.

The left rear isn't broken, so why fix it if it ain't broke? Right?

Well....I would have a hard time putting on just one turn signal...when the pair won't match!

Title: Re: Cracked Speedometer Cover
Post by DesertRat on 05/08/16 at 17:12:36

that was my exact thought process Dave ... once I put one on, they didn't match ... one was nice and shiny, the other "road worn" ... didn't look quite right ...

my thread on this MOD is somewhere here ...
I ain't gonna hunt it down ... too f#@%ing lazy today ...  ;)

oram ...

I think I wound up buying them on AMAZON for a bit less than I could find them on eBay ...
your mileage may vary ...

the one you linked "looks" right for your application ...
the lens screw looks like it's on the bottom, so that would work for a right rear, I think ... which is another reason I bought them as a "pair" ... I wanted to make sure I got the correct one installed in the correct position on the bike ...

my research and purchases were numerous over a month or two ... I purchased and sent back MANY, MANY signals which claimed to be direct swaps or fits and were outright lies ... until I found those K&S ... there's a thread on this forum somewhere which chronicles my "journey"  ;D
