This is Ballen's breakfast on a plate, as far as photography goes. Everyone must've come across 'Dresie and Casie' before, at least as an internet meme? :D |

Post by DesertRat on 05/02/16 at 20:09:13 I love his work with those cast from societies eyes ... he shoves it right in the face ... humanity in the "shadows" ... they exist, they're human ... just like you ... ;) While Ballen's work is often described as "dark", he describes his photography as essentially psychological, and speaks of the images referring to humanity's "shadow side". He say: "Shadow is better than dark, because dark for a lot of people connotates evil, and I always say it’s just the opposite. [...] The pictures shouldn’t be seen as dark, and I’m not quite clear what is ‘dark’, anyway." |

Post by HovisPresley on 05/02/16 at 20:22:18 The fact that his stuff may look like 'Depression-era/dustbowl' stuff, but is taken in the 90's, in a 'modern' country, etc. Reminds me of when I went to 'post-Ceausescu' Romania 25 years ago, as an independent traveler. It was a huge culture shock for me... I only have mental pictures rather than photographic, but they are quite 'Ballenesque' . |

Ballen reminds me of this local who hangs in the shadows here in the valley, photographing the homeless and outcasts with his Hasselblad 500 or 1600 can't remember ... one day he was out and was beat for his camera ... sad sh!t, since most of the people knew him and would kindly sit for a portrait, he paid $10-20 to these folks to let him take a picture ... |

Post by HovisPresley on 05/02/16 at 20:55:46 I think Ballen has a sense of balance, ie. he doesn't use his subjects as 'circus freaks' as such... but puts the perceived world of his subjects into question....the world of their daily existence which we can only wonder upon....and in those shadows lies the 'darkness'. The same way as the kid playing the banjo in 'Deliverance' is popularly focused on, but for me, the brief view of the granny through the net-covered window in the cabin is far more disturbing. |
