Title: Front wheel clearance - S40
Post by Julianne on 05/01/16 at 09:55:17

Does anyone know the clearance needed between the front fender and tire of the S40 ?

depends on how much garbage you pick up.
the fender moves with the wheel, you can have a little clearance as you want.

Also, tires vary in size between mfr's.

Most factory stuff is 3/4 - 1 inch to allow for variations it tires, and an occasional piece of gravel stuck in the tread.

If you only ride on pavement, and don't change tire size....I would not use less than 1/4", and a bit more would be better.

I have seen some show bikes with very little clearance - not sure if they are functional in the real world.

it's all "cool", until you take a rock to the face ...   ;)

With the stock fender and full face helmet I still got hit under the chin with gritty road grunge. A mudflap would be a good addition even on dry roads. With summer upon us we see people watering the yard, sometimes it runs off and into the road. I can't imagine how much of a mess that is for the
No fender
crowd.
How critical is the tire to fender distance? I dunno. It's not excessive looking to me, stock, but, closer might look better. Could you just move the holes ?  How close are you wanting to get it? Do the tires distort and get a little taller at speed?
I'd bet you can get it to 1/2" and not cause any problems, not sure what it's gonna gain you, if the hassle is gonna be more than the look is worth.

Yes, they do.

Just for giggles, I tried to put my finger under the fender and couldn't. Why would you want less room?

Thanks everyone !
The shop that put on my new tires didn't put in enough gap and when I was on the highway, the tire started to rub and I had some vibrating.  When they "fixed" it I still wanted to make sure they did it right.

Why would they have removed the front fender to put a tire on?

That would have been a really good first post.

I'm with Dave, why did they mess with the fender putting a front tire one? was it oversize compared to the stock one?

I don't know why they messed with it.  It was the same size tire.  How is it adjusted ?

the bolt holes in the fender are slotted I believe
some folks who want bigger front tires slot them some more
