I'm in the market for a carb jet cleaning set. I found several el cheapos and a couple over a hundred $. Two were in the 25-40$ range(which works for me). What do you guys recommend(price range, brand, our application) ? Will the inexpensive sets do the job ?

Not sure what you mean by a "carb jet cleaning set".

If you mean little things to ream/clean out the jets.....you really don't need that. The brass jets don't corrode much - they just get dirt stuck in them.......or the fuel can get gummy and plug them up....the pilot jet is the first one to clog as the holes are tiny.

Most of the time you can just clean them out with a solvent of some sort....spray carb cleaner, acetone, carb dip that come in a quart or gallon can, etc. If the goo is stubborn and doesn't dissolve easily - you can poke one of the bristles in a wire brush thought the jet.

If you want a jet cleaner, you can get them pretty cheap from a welding supply store.....they have them for cleaning out welding tips in a torch. They are like small files....so don't use it too much or you will make the hole larger.

Yep, welding tip cleaner, a can of carb cleaner and yami dip.
less than $10 in tools, $20 of consumables and your set.

Sounds good - I'll buy the cheapie Versy - that blue set looks like a nozzle gauge set for main jets that I saw on line this morning

The 2nd down is a stubby jet cleaner.

The last one is a set of circuit board drill bit set. Once upon a time i worked in the US circuit board manufacturing on the gold lines. These bits were used to rework the vias

I have the K&L set as shown in the Rat's post.

The K&L set works good but you won't use it very often.

I just use the tip cleaner for the torch on jets.

I would like an ultrasonic cleaner for things like carbs. I couldn't get my carb unstopped a couple years back, so my bike shop threw it in their "blaster" for a while and she cleaned right up. :)

A few years ago I bought an ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight. I first bought the small one and it worked OK for chainsaw and mower carbs - but was just a bit too small for motorcycle carbs. Later I bought the larger one, and it has proven to be a very good tool. You can use diluted Purple Power, Simple Green, or other cleaners, and the heater really helps to clean things up fast.

I generally take a stiff brush and get as much crud off the outside as I can before I take the carb apart, and the cleaner can be re-used several times when you attempt to keep it clean. I also dump the used cleaner out of the ultrasonic cleaner and into a gallon sized container - and the crud settles to the bottom when it sits for a few days, and you can then carefully pour the used cleaner back into the ultrasonic cleaner.....while leaving the crud in the bottom of the storage jar (to be dumped out in the gravel driveway).

I am not always impressed with the quality and usefulness of Harbor Freight tools - but the ultrasonic cleaner is a winner!
