Title: Just bought my first motorcycle (LS650)
Post by Elmer on 04/25/16 at 11:18:01

Hello forum people.  I am a lurker and read for hours before ever posting.  I purchased my LS650 for $400.  bought new battery, changed oil and cleaned carb all from posts on this website.  I do believe I have to famous Oil leak everyone talks about so that is my next step.   You probably won't see too much of me unless I break this thing.

Cheers!

Good luck with your bike and don't be a stranger to the forum.  You can chime in on any topic.  There are some guys here who know just about everything about these bikes including routine maintenance and practices that will keep your bike running reliably.

Make sure the oil leak isn't a simple one due to the thru bolts on the foot pegs being loose. If that's it, you really got a steal...and you probably did regardless.

It is a 1995 and it has 26k miles.  I rode it for about 45 miles before finding a massive oil leak that got all over the carb on the right side.  THe fork seals are also in need of replacing and it needs a new front tire.  Other then that it fires right up and runs really good.  Idles around 900-1k and stops on a dime.

It's definitely due some cam chain service.

You might save your seals with a thin plastic tool. It's worth a try.

Yes! I actually learned about that trick on this website.  I cleaned them all out on both sides but i'm still seeing residue after I ride.  I believe one of them has failed and the other is not far behind.  No worries though! I have a LOT Of tools and a little bit of time.  I'll knock it out with help from the forum!   ;D

Don't overlook the cam chain issue. It's nearly always fatal for the engine.
Having limited time will be okay. Just think through, have a plan, prepare the work are, have your
