Title: Nomination for Savage Iron Butt Award
Post by springman on 04/22/16 at 16:29:44

If you all read the last few posts about the Twisted Sisters ride you all know that MM rode around 830 miles in about 17 hours. I think this qualifies him for the first ever Savage Iron Butt Award. I am not good with graphics so if someone wants to put something together to acknowledge this endeavor, go for it.

MM, all I can really say is WOW. My but hurt with the previous day's 300 mile ride. ;D

:o 830 miles in 17 hours on his Savage !!!!!!  That definitely qualifies him for something.... Either an "Iron Butt Award" OR some therapy... I'm thinking more the second ......... ;)

830 miles in 17 hours = 48-49 MPH average

What I want to know is HOW MANY FUEL STOPS over that distance?

Title: Re: Nomination for Savage Iron Butt Award
Post by MMRanch on 04/22/16 at 20:26:08

The longest stretch was 108 miles , couple more right at 100  , then there were lots of " Well-- 20 + miles to next exit , but I'm on 90's miles now  :-? --- better get some fuel now !  ;) "   ,

The seat didn't hurt ... The right shoulder got tired of balancing the weight on the "Cramp-Buster" throttle pad , a throttle "Lock" would be better .  The first 600-700 miles was a nice ride  ;) .

A Five gallon tank ...  :P          200 miles between fuel-ups  :P :P

So with the front Kawasaki pulley the Savage thinks its running 68 mph when the GPS says we're doing 76 mph ground speed.  That's with a 140/90 tire.  :)

You'll never find a motorcycle parked at a psychiatrist unless he owns one.
All we need is a full tank of gas and a sorta sunny day... and in a pinch even a rainy day will do.
I guess I'll start calling my bike a cycletrist.
after a week long session, I'm ready to go back to work with a smile.   8-)

For what it is worth.

If I was going to do any serious touring I would add an auxiliary fuel tank that held about the same amount of fuel as the factory Savage/S40 tank.

When I would get to 100 miles I would stop, stretch my legs, and switch over to the auxiliary tank.

If you set it up to run off of only one tank at a time there would be none of the problems associated with two tanks, such as one tank feeding into the other tank, etc.

My 2 cents worth.

I've had a busy weekend .   Our CMA group did a benefit run for St.Judes Saturday  then the cornbread feastistible two county's over   (about 270 miles) , Friday was a busy day too.  Then Sunday was my turn to "come-up with a lesson" at Church .   been a busy + fun weekend !    Did win a "Door Prize" $25.oo gift card

MM, curiosity has gotten the best of me.  How much oil did you consume on that day?

Best I can tell , "Roy" didn't use any oil ... but he's only got 26,000 + miles .  ;)

Did any body get a count on about how many miles we rode once we got to Texas ?  :-?
I would guess maybe ??? 150 - a day ??

thanks for that image pg ... great idea for heading out on long road trips out in the desert southwest, where gas stations are few and far between ..

Title: Re: Nomination for Savage Iron Butt Award
Post by MMRanch on 04/25/16 at 09:46:31

I couldn't see the image , but a "Taller" fuel tank should fit just fine.   I've been using my Garmin mounted in the middle of the handlebars for a speedometer because the Kawasaki sprocket makes the factory speedometer wrong anyway , so doing away with the factory speedometer would be OK.  ;)  might miss my neutral light and turn signal reminders a little ??   :-/
Anybody found a longer speedometer cable ?  :-?  ??? should probely ask that in a different thread ...  :P

Title: Re: Nomination for Savage Iron Butt Award
Post by KennyG on 04/25/16 at 10:42:56

MM,

Ryca has a longer speedometer cable.

If you live anywhere near an old time speedometer shop they will make you a cable using the threaded ends from your existing cable. Cheap too.

For the speedo cable, get a tach cable for Suzuki GT750. It is a direct swap and is long enough for the speedometer reposition.

Post by verslagen1 on 04/25/16 at 10:54:00

In regards to the soft tail tank, look for the carbed version or you'll have to deal with the FI pump in the tank.

Since we've had good luck with adapting the Kawasaki tanks over... I think a police special K1000 tank would be a better fit.

Thank you guys for the recognition of my foolishness. In all honesty I must add details of my ''weekend''.
Friday- 600 miles Palm Beach County to Columbia SC
Sat, Sun about 50 miles running around Columbia and 2 full days sitting watching a Roller Derby tournament.
Monday overnight and Monday- Columbia to N. Ga. and into N.C. riding twisties.
Tuesday- 670 miles home
So it was not a true 2 day weekend, it was basically 3 days of riding with 2 days of sitting/cheering/yelling in between.
But the best part is they will have playoffs there in Sept. so I'll get to do it again. I don't look at a long ride to get there as a drag, I look at it as a chance to ride my bike ALL DAY!
Now let's see about that notice of a class reunion in Western NY in July, got to get that Yamaha 4.2 gal tank on.....

Title: Re: Nomination for Savage Iron Butt Award
Post by badwolf on 04/25/16 at 11:26:19

Hey MM, You said you were going 100 miles or so between fill-ups, what is the most you have gone before hitting reserve? I get 4.4 gals to reserve with a raptor, doesn't leave you much of a cushion.  In N. Ga I get the best mileage for some reason, went 155 miles (gps) fore I hit reserve once. I drive slower than most guys here I gather witch helps. Coming home it took 2.588 gallons once to fill-up, that was cutting it close, but mid-day weekday all stations are open, hell I had what, 10 more miles fore I had to push?
Like I said above, got to get that bigger tank on!

OK.....I'll ask the obvious question.  How do you fit 4.4 gallons into a tank that holds 2.8 gallons?

O.K. BIG typo. Should be 2.4 gals. ....Unless I can find some kind of a ''gas shoehorn''. A ''gashorn''?
I do have a 4.2 gal Yamaha tank, as per Smokinblue, but it is going to take a while to do the swap. New inst. panel, home built seat, it all takes time away from riding.

What kinda tank you got now ?

Wow , where would ya mount that extra tank ?  Behind the seat ?

PG,

Good find.

http://shop.spunaluminumgastanks.com/8x12-Center-Fill-25-Gallon-w-Internal-baffle-and-vent-tube-Tour-M812C.htm

This is exactly what I would mount behind the drivers seat if I got into any serious touring, which isn't likely.

MM, I have a tank from a Yamaha 650 V-Star to replace the stock tank. Smokinblue posted about it a few months ago. The stock inst. cluster does not just slap-on and the seat must be modded.  I am tossing the stock inst. cluster and going with a Android phone with a gps speedo app. and led idiot lights. I am running both Kaw pulleys and a 150/90 15 rear tire, so the stock unit is 22% off.  Hoping to get that elusive 200 mile range.

Kenny, If I was doing Trans-Alaska that tank would be great, but for all around use ,, not for me.
The fuel bottles are something you could mount semi-discreetly, however..

Wolf,

I don't ride far enough at any one time anymore to need a larger tank.

If I was younger, and still hitting Daytona for Bike Week, I would have a bigger tank and probably it would be one of the spun aluminum tanks that was some where near quick detachable.

I like the idea of a 4 or 4.5 gal reg tank w/speedometer on the handlebars.  But don't have a clue which tank might work.  :-?

Wolf , it  sounds like your able to take the long rides with some of us !  8-)

That's easy... find a kawa VN probably 750 tank (ala sieversavage)

Almost looks like a savage tank without the speedo hole.

I'm still gonna try to put a GZ250 tank on my Savage @ some point. The front mounts need to be narrowed and moved forward tho.
