Title: Head Cover plug job
Post by Graven754 on 04/19/16 at 11:47:37

So Ive got my Verslagen plug and i'm about ot dive into this job. I'm stripping it all down to the point in which i would install the head plug then i'm putting it all back together. Are there any gaskets I need to replace during this process or is everything done with gasket maker/sealant? If there is no gasket what do you guys recommend using?

There is an O-ring around the oil port at the rear....it is never a bad thing to replace that.  There are also some of the head cap bolts that have little sealing washers on them.....those are good to replace as well.  And the valve inspection caps have sealing rings (oval shaped rings) that get a bit hard and stiff.....those are nice to replace.

Use the stuff they sell at bike shops, not RTV.  Yamabond or equivalent.
Know Exactly how many bolts you have to loosen. Know which one must be in the head cover on installation and which one is upside down. Draw an outline of the head cover on cardboard, slice it and stick each bolt in its place. Different lengths all over up there.
If you have never had the tank off, pick a place to set it before you have it in your hands. Gotta be up off the floor so the speedo cable doesn't get bent up. Watch out for the o ring in the cup of the cable.
Thin and even on the gasket goo. That's what determines the gap on the cam. Don't try to tighten it down in two passes. Go slow, let the goo creep, make passes till the bolts get there, don't rush them.

It would be good if someone could make up a parts list for making the oil plug change. Most of us will be putting in the Verslagen fix at some point.

Excellent idea. Don't forget to include the tool sizes.
