Title: Oxidized Aluminum?
Post by DesertRat on 04/13/16 at 16:23:17

what's the best way to deal with the oxidized aluminum on the rear wheel hub and brake cover?

I took Marvel Mystery Oil to mine. Took a good bit of rust off with light pressure. Along with some eagle all wheel cleaner

I know Coke and aluminum foil will remove rust from chrome without scarring it. It might work to clean up oxidation as well.

now that I'm looking over this rear wheel, it may take days/weeks of scrubbing to get the oxidation off, it ain't a light film, it's pretty heavy ...

Hey DeserRat. That is funny. I was wondering if anybody else had seen any of Mr. Cleanmouth's videos. He may not be the most well spoken individual, but he seems to know about bikes. Well I guess it is time to say so long to all the ----ers and ----ettes. ;D ;D ;D

I wish I would have known this before I went out and spent 30 buck on chrome polishes and cleaners.

Marvel Mystery Oil DOES NOT WORK. It only removes the very light white oxidation, the stuff you could rub off with your finger and a tissue.

I let the hub soak overnight in some OxyClean, it only served to removed oil, grease and brake dust.

I'm still hunting for a solution to this horrible oxidation

Marvel Mystery Oil rub down and overnight OxyClean soaked hub

still oxidized ...

rubbing even with a powerball ain't gonna get this off ...
click on the photos and look at the enlarged images ...
it is HEAVILY oxidized ...

I'm looking into a table top blast cabinet, using baking soda/powder as media ...

Wow. That looks like it gets parked in the ocean. Perfect for a rat bike. I Think the only way to make that one nice again would be disassemble it and have it blasted. Or do it by hand with wet and dry. Then new spokes cause those rusty ones won't look right anymore.

The time your bike will be down, hours of labor, why not look for a decent used one?  That Is crusty.

I was going to suggest soda blasting but you beat me to it!  ;D

Build your own

I built a siphon gun/wash down gun, by putting a piece of tubing on a blow gun. Ditch the rubber, drill, solder... done.
Poke a hole in small diameter tubing, poke the tubing in and down the tubing. Pull the trigger and the air blowing out pulls a vacuum on the other end.
Dunno if you have a shop. Room for stuff. Box on a pole or a bench. A break down box, to stack parts.  Lots of options.

gizzo,
the original owner bought the bike in HAWAII and moved/shipped it here. The majority of the aluminum is CRUSTY.

Justin,
I am thinking of going the route you described. I have some old components from a previous sand blaster (gun, hoses, siphon etc) I got some 5 gallon buckets and other bits and parts I could build that blaster for almost free.

On  submarine perhaps? :P
If you build the soda blaster, please post up the result. That would be a great thing to have.

Harbor Freight has a sand blaster, just plug into the air hose. Set up on top of the five gallon bucket, and catch the stuff.

Post by Ed L. on 04/17/16 at 07:44:43

If that was mine it would get a wire brushing along with a wet/dry sanding of the spokes then a good coat of rattle can satin black. It's too far gone to be an easy cleanup.  :(
Some type of blasting would work but it would take a few hours to get it completely cleaned up and then the spokes would still need to be painted.

Thanks Ed,

I agree, the spokes are too far gone. I am going to order a polished stainless steel spoke kit from Buchanan Spokes -

It's the hubs I wanted cleaned up for chrome. It's a "vision" I have of the completed project that is a majority chrome

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/17/16 at 08:45:48

Why down the bike that long? I'd be looking at a rear wheel from the junkyard or someone parting one out. Clean one up, ride one, once it's done, sell the other. If I wuzgonna hop one up as far as I could, I'd get a motor, build one, ride one, sell,,

You know where to get chrome done? Costs? Used to be able to get chrome done in Odessa. Several places where the vats were in plain sight, ping pong balls covering the surface. EPA regs have driven most out, prices are up. I THINK I heard something about another process that is close to chrome, but not exactly the same. One of those
Watching tv and piddling on the kindle
moments, where I didn't catch the whole thing..

I went looking. Seems like there are quite a few sources left.

From one source
Aluminum objects are first zinc coated, then copper, nickel & chrome.

Four steps,, and it's gonna be on you to get it smooth and clean.

I would want to know how thick the coating is and the diameter of the spoke holes and diameter of the new spokes. You don't want to need to drill.  And what happens on crisp ninety degree angles? Do you need to soften the edges of the spoke holes?
How much slop is needed to be able to lace the wheel?

I've heard about guys getting parts back that had been coated, dangitt, what's the stuff you hafta bake?  Anyway, allowing surfaces where bearings sit, other machined for necessary clearance dimension type places, you gotta protect them from getting chromed.

If I'm telling you a buncha stuff you already know, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, just hoping to help you avoid any bear traps.

The hub was rough. Where the molten aluminum was poured into the cast, they didn't grind it. It was cut off with what looked like, from the marks left, something like a farrier would use. The surfaces that weren't machined were coarse. IF a guy could hang a leather strap in there, it wouldn't help. That was a good answer on the bicycle front axle.

Post by DesertRat on 04/17/16 at 09:07:22

Justin,

the parts are from the donor bikes, no down time for me, I have my bike to ride. This is a project, as you pointed out, ride one, build one, sell one, KEEPS ME SANE.

Best chrome shop in the valley is:
Kerr West Plating Inc
Address: 4737 N 43rd Ave #3, Phoenix, AZ 85031
Phone:(623) 937-8676

Toured the shop, cool owners, used them in the past for polishing on one of my art projects.

I'm looking to get the frame, tins and everything I can chrome or polished stainless. I'm a certified GTAW (TIG) welder and can do most of the work myself, I'm just a LAZY SOB and looking for the easiest, least expensive way to get this done = more PROFIT in my pocket come selling time.

Oh, I'm stealing the idea. No shame here. It was BOT's bike that got me thinking about an all chrome bike then the search was on ...  ;)

It is a beautiful bike!

Title: Re: Oxidized Aluminum?
Post by Dave on 04/18/16 at 15:53:17

OK....I am late to this thread  - but those parts are so far gone you really should not try and save them.  The corrosion will be deep, and no amount of sanding and buffing is going to get the deep black pits out of the aluminum benath those white blossoms.  Even if you sandblast the pieces, you will need to powder coat them to get any kind of a finish on them.

You are either going to have to embrace the corroded look and build a Rat Bike, or powder coat or paint them - or you are going to have to get some better parts.

Thank you ...

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/18/16 at 17:11:36

Okay, you need parts that will clean up and chrome. Is that thing Usable, safely? If so, would it be worth the effort to swap that poor, irretrievably uglified thing onto your bike and send the one you're using off for chrome? Nobody has to know how ugly it is,some paint would hide a lot of the fugly for a while. Then it's gonna flake off.

Title: Re: Oxidized Aluminum?
Post by DesertRat on 04/18/16 at 19:17:44

Justin,

YES, the parts are safe, as long as I swap the spokes and bearings, they will function safely.

The oxidation is cosmetic, and has not gone so far as to compromise the integrity. The pitting is only a few thousandths deep, it is rough to the touch but not DEEP.

Title: Re: Oxidized Aluminum?
Post by Dave on 04/19/16 at 05:10:30

If do take the wheels apart......it is possible to get the hubs bead blasted, and then powder coated.  I have seen black hubs and they look really nice, and there are also silver colors that would look good.  Sanding and buffing to get polished aluminum is a very time consuming process, and you have to continually keep up with the polishing or it will corrode again....especially since you have removed the clear coat.

Title: Re: Oxidized Aluminum?
Post by DesertRat on 04/19/16 at 08:49:20

at this juncture, I'm going to try a boaters technique and use a diluted muriatic acid solution. These guys use it to clean all the aluminum parts that have been corroded by salt water. My plan is to dilute by 2x what they use as a safety measure.

Title: Re: Oxidized Aluminum?
Post by Kris01 on 04/19/16 at 18:57:58

I've never used Muriatic acid on aluminum before so I can't comment on that. But, it's an old trick to remove rust from iron/steel by soaking it in Muriatic acid. However, it will turn the iron black. You NEED to wash the part afterwards with baking soda and water to neutralize the acid. Good luck and post some "after" pics. I'm curious as to how the acid works on aluminum.  ;)

~UPDATE~

I know that Castrol Super Clean is BRUTAL on the aluminum covers ... made that mistake already on my daily ride. Sprayed all the greasy grimey bits on the bike and it ate through the clear coat on the covers ...

With that fact, I bought a gallon and mixed 5:1 with HOT water.

Took the hub and dropped it in for about 10-12 minutes. Then scrubbed part with a green ScotchBrite pad while it was in solution.

It is as smooth as glass now.  :)

It is discolored, slightly grey with some dark grey/black splotches, but I wasn't looking for shiny bright, just a smooth surface.
