Title: Dragon Vid
Post by gizzo on 04/11/16 at 20:45:15

Here's one I came across today looking for other stuff. This guy knows how to ride. But, what is it with tossbags on cruisers blocking crew who are clearly faster? God that makes me angry.

by 'crew who know what they're doing' I assume you mean the tossbag who is traveling at over 2x the posted limit on a public road and getting andry when others don't 'do their duty' by clearing a way
I realize the guy has skills, and they really should have moved over (i did, many times) but running 70 and 80 on a road posted at 30 you gotta expect there are gonna be folks going slower, and not all of them are going to respond to your superior skill (and better suited bike) by moving over
If you want to move that fast without obstruction the place to do it is on a racetrack

What do the yellow numbers that show up periodically mean?

Kenny G

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by old_rider on 04/12/16 at 07:48:21

They yellow numbers are the number of "pull overs", if you are being tailgated on the dragon, it is courteous to pull over and let the other riders pass.
Most Hurley riders refuse to do that.... I don't know.... maybe they don't want to get the idea someone is faster than they are....
Old Feller don't care.... he passes them on the outside of a curve :)

Guess we'll just have to differ on that point, art. I don't imagine he expected a clear run with no traffic but its good form to use slow points if your holding someone up. I don't appreciate being held up 'for my own good'. The guy did ride very well and stayed in his own lane. Anyway, I enjoyed it.

I'm guessing the speedo is estimated cause it was done after the fact.

or does the camera autolink to the bike and gps?

I think the population of deer around the Dragon have either learned to say away from the road during daylight hours....or they have become road kill.

The Dragon is a real mix of traffic......from slow motorhomes and campers to 1,000 cc sport bikes.  There are times when you can hustle along really quickly and be reasonably safe - other times there is just too much traffic to allow you to ride fast safely. You need to stay in your lane at all speeds, and be ready for anyone to be in your lane around every corner.  Both motorcycles and motorhomes can be surprised by the decreasing radius and blind corners and fail to stay in their lane.

I have found the need to pass slow riders....some easily wave you buy, and others believe it is acceptable to be a slowly moving obstacle.  I generally don't have a problem finding my way around them.....or I just turn around and ride the other direction for a while (The Dragon is fun in either direction!).

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by KennyG on 04/12/16 at 12:09:48

Verslagen,

I would like to meet up for the ride.

At my age I am reluctant to ride a great distance by myself and there is no one nearby going to The Dragon.

If I had a pickup truck I would haul the bike to the ride, and I have never ever trucked a bike to an event... Wisdom comes with age.....LOL.....

Title: Re: Dragon Vid

Being in california, that's why I bought a truck, too far to ride a savage across country.

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by KennyG on 04/12/16 at 12:40:07

Verslagen,

Maybe my next vehicle will be a pickup truck.
Meanwhile I am going to start looking for a small trailer.

If anyone has any input about purchasing or using a small trailer to haul motorcycles it would be appreciated.....

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by Dave on 04/12/16 at 12:42:54

The 5 hours between KY and NC on the interstate is not all that much fun on a motorcycle, and often when I leave it is late at night after a Council meeting and I don't arrive until 2 AM!

I prefer to do that traveling in my car...with the bike behind me in the trailer.  There is no shame in towing a bike to a riding event the way I see it.....and my trailer even gives me a place to sleep along the way!

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by KennyG on 04/12/16 at 12:49:42

Dave,

Can you give me some information on the trailer.

How much should i pay for a trailer like the one in the pic?

Kenny G

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by Dave on 04/12/16 at 13:14:42

The trailer I bought was used, it is a 5'x8' Challenger series built by Homesteader.  It was owned by a guy that hauled show rabbits all over the country, and that is why he had windows installed.  I am not sure how expensive they are new - I paid $ 800 for it and I spent about $ 200 on the epoxy bed liner for the floor, paint, and LED lights to replace the ones that had stopped working.

I don't know about your area - but in this area there are a lot of these small trailer for sale used.  Folks buy them to haul band equipment, churches and schools buy them, small contractors buy them....and then they either don't need them any more or they outgrow the smaller ones and get bigger ones.  This one is perfect for the Savage and my small car - the trailer is 48" tall inside and you only need to remove the mirrors before loading eh Savage inside.  I have the bike on the left side, and I sleep on the right side.

If you have a bigger car/truck and a V-6, you could get a bigger trailer and a more comfortable bed - but this small trailer is perfect for my 4 cylinder car and my mileage drops from 30 mpg to 25 mpg when hauling the trailer and a bike.

I guess that's another way to do it. The ride lasts longer, so that's nice. And the thumper does sound cheery. Good to see you guys getting let past by the slower ones. Crap that road's crowded though.

The speed in the videos and the sharpness of the curves can be misleading.  I was watching a video of a local road near me that I ride often......and there is a very sharp curve that can catch a lot of riders by surprise.  In the video the curve didn't look at all threatening, and the video just didn't show how tight the curve really is.

The Dragon has a speed limit of 30 mph - there are several curves that just can't be ridden at that speed (sport bikes with race tires and pucks on the riders knees may be an exception).

The Dragon can be really crowded at times.....all day Saturday can be bad, and Sunday is bad until about 4 PM - then the traffic gets really light.  Weekdays are pretty good - however the road is traveled by folks heading to the Nantahala area to go rafting/kayaking and you always have to expect some traffic.  Very few people ride the Dragon after dark.

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by Art Webb on 04/13/16 at 08:22:41

That's exactly right, the Dragon is far more intimidating in person than on video, and the posted limit is 30 mph
I pull over, and i don't pregnant dog about folks passing me (in fact I wish AL of the faster ones would just pass, safely, and not ride my tail, that's not cool)
My negative reaction was to the entitled attitude of the rider in the video, and the idea that others owed it to him to move
'It's a public road, not a racetrack, and while I agree it is more polite to get out of the way, there isn't a requirement to
as to Harley Rider's reaction to being passed, you should see them when they get passed by a scooter  ;D

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by Dave on 04/13/16 at 08:32:32

There are all kinds of folks and attitudes on the Dragon.  I remember coming up behind a man riding his Harley behind his woman on hers.....they were both riding about half my speed.  At the first straight the man got near the edge and waved me around, and I waved to him in appreciation as I passed by.  That put me between him and his woman - and she was bound and determined that I was not going to pass her.  I followed her for what seemed like a long time, and when I got to a straight section that was clear I passed safely (although the entire Dragon is a  "no passing" zone with double yellow center line), and she blew her horn at me in protest!

There are folks on Sport Bikes who can ride twice my speed, and as soon as I see them coming I move over and wave them by.  The scary (dangerous) ones are the riders who come so fast you can't never see them coming, and they dive underneath you in the curves without warning!  (They good news is that it isn't all that common - but it has happened to me).

Post by springman on 04/13/16 at 08:55:22

Heck, I see I missed all the conversation. Sorry been very busy. But heck yeah the Dragon is fun even if a bit intimidating. The secret as I see it is to follow someone that can pick good lines (what Versy did) and that makes the ride much easier for you. I have another video at home where the camera actually sees the speedometer at times and well maybe we were going a little faster than posted at times. Maybe. I am not admitting to anything. ;)

Thanks Kenny. I appreciate the compliment.

In all honesty riding the 3 twisted sisters is a much easier ride and just as enjoyable as the Dragon. That is, if you ride with someone that really knows the roads like Youzguyz. If you get the chance to ride on a ride that Youzguyz is leading you will have so much fun.

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by KennyG on 04/13/16 at 20:47:09

SpringMan,

I would like to do the 3 Twisted Sisters, but that long ride by myself is scary. I am just too darned old to survive along the side of the highway for any length of time if i have a breakdown.

I am going to start looking around for a trailer and maybe that will be the answer.

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by springman on 04/14/16 at 07:35:46

Like I say, getting old sucks, but it sure beats the alternative. I understand you Kenny. I like to still consider myself young (58), but I know my body just cannot do everything it could when I was younger.

Yes, looking for a means for transporting your bike is a great idea. My wife has actually been pushing me to get a pick up so I can make the far away rides more often. When finances allow I will probably explore my bike hauling options more closely.

I hope we get a chance to ride together some day.

Spring Man,

We will get a chance to ride someday.

I ran into a guy today that lives here at The Ranch that is 85 years old and just bought a new Triumph Thruxton.

The more I see of guys older than me riding the more optimistic I get about how many more years that I too will be riding..

That Kenny is a cool story. I have to admit that I was greatly encouraged when I saw an older gentleman pull up to my neighbor's house on a big ole harley (before i got my bike). It was a really pretty bike and so I told him I thought it was a nice bike. We got to talking and he told me he had just started riding a year or so ago. He was about 65 at the time. I said yeah, I can do this. I think it was about a year or so after that that I got my bike.

Well, here is wishing good health and happy riding to all us "older" fellows. ;D

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by springman on 04/14/16 at 21:26:04

Yep Desetrat, cruising is what it is all about. ;) For me the pace was brisk but acceptable. Would I like to go faster? On a closed course with full leathers, on somebody else's bike (I'm not gonna risk my bike), you betcha (but that ain' gonna happen). Out on the public roads with all the traffic? No thanks that was fast enough. ;D ;D

Title: Re: Dragon Vid
Post by Art Webb on 04/22/16 at 08:44:30

Kenny, there are guys on my S wing forum who are still riding in their 90s, and 70 somethings making cross country trips
I DO recommend trailering with a reliable 4 wheeler for those farther away rides though, it makes a world of diference when you arrive fresh at the venue
I also recommend a small trailer with tow vehicle over just tossing it in a pickup, it's far easier and safer to load a bike in a trailer than on a truck, and if using an enclosed cargo trailer, you can tie the bike against the side of the trailer and have bed space next to it, like Dave's trailer, which he pulls with a small car
