Title: S40 Major Engine Vibration ~Exhaust Valve Leak
Post by CruzerDayz on 04/11/16 at 19:27:43

Hello Suzuki Gods!
This is my first savage/S40 project. It's my girlfriend's bike.

I was hoping it was the tensioner... Nope..
19mm... At the end of its life, but was still doing it's job.
(Need to send this one to you Verslavy, but the forum says I need 10 posts first)

Did a leak down and... Sure Enough...
Leak on one of the exhaust valves.

Any tricks to clean the seat/valve without pulling the head? It's soaking in WD-40 now. Leak is about 40%.

can't really respond to vibrations in a video.
but in general, if the engine mounting bolts are loose, you'll feel more vibrations.
And where you feel it generally is where you gotta tighten.
footpegs, tighten the bottom
handlebars, tighten the top.

Bring it up on compression.
Pull it off plug, modify a plug, find a bolt, whatever it takes, get compressed air in the cylinder.
Pull the oil fill .

Get the valve spring off and spin the valve.

Not sure that is even physically possible, but that's what I would Want to do.

If the exhaust valve is actually leaking 40%, pull the head and get a valve job done.   That WILL solve the problem without causing other issues by messing with it.
You've gotta wonder if one valve is leaking there may be others close to it as well.
And then, WHAT exactly caused the valve to start leaking in the first place.
You need to find out.

Back in the old days.....a leaky valve could have been caused by a piece of carbon that has come loose when you removed a spark plug, or if the engine was carboned up badly.  Modern fuels and leaner mixtures have reduced that chance - but it is still possible.  Generally those kind of leaks correct themselves with a little bit of riding - but the big problem that would occur is somebody would be doing a tune up and have the plugs out and get the carbon in the valve....then proceed to do a valve adjustment with the carbon holding the valve off the seat.  With the valve being adjusted wrong and the valve leaking the entire time the engine is running - a burned valve would occur soon thereafter.

If a bit of riding and a proper valve adjustment doesn't cure the valve leak - it is time to take the head off and see what is going on.  Unfortunately the valves cannot be ground, and are supposed to be replaced if the surface is no longer in good condition......the seats can be resurfaced.
