Title: Stp oil treatment
Post by Redryder652 on 04/10/16 at 17:51:29

So I was reading an old post about someone who had a slipping clutch and he was doing a bunch of oil changes with like 50% of that Lucas oil treatment. Is it bad to use this stuff? I've used it a few times in my s40 but only about 10 or 15 percent at a time? Is there a grave danger in the future? I'm also running 10 40 mc oil and I plan to do the swap to rotella. Thanks in advance.

There is no
Too soon
for switching to Rotella.
Anything not good for a wet clutch is bad.
You don't have to outsmart the engine. It's okay to add some ZDDP, but more isn't better, so, know what you are doing before you do it.
What will get ya is, run a few hundred miles, check the oil, perfect,, and the brain relaxes a little bit.
Get a thousand miles on that Oil and Then run a few hundred miles,,, and, shazzam, down on oil..

Usage rate changes as the oil gets beaten up by running through the gears and getting sheared and crushed. My opinion.

Swapping to Rotella sometimes can improve a bad clutch. It's a wet clutch and Rotella has detergents made for dirty diesel engines. The oil can clean a dirty, glazed clutch.  ;)

Really? Which rotella is the best for these engines? I'm guessing the most expensive right?

Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 is the best, it's a synthetic oil.  There is also a 15w-40 version which is conventional and also a great oil.  Both versions have a pretty high amount of ZDDP compared to most motorcycle specific oils, which will help to keep your engine running smoothly.

Just plain ol' Rotella. You can use the synthetic version if you ride in a really hot climate or idle a lot. It doesn't break down as easily in the heat as regular dino oil.

T6 is 5W-40?

Thanks. I never really looked. I just assumed it was 15W-40 too.

Yes, I use it in my 2003 Savage.  Also sorry about deleting my original response, didn't notice the quote button there so figured I should use it!

I've got an old bottle of rotella t triple protection, hasn't been touched. Should this be good?

One bottle isn't going to be enough, and I would be absolutely sure to change the filter if I were changing from one type of oil to another.  Also, as a word of advice.  After you drain the oil go ahead and stand the bike upright  for a minute.  You can't get all the old stuff out sitting on the side stand.  There's another 200ml that'll come pouring out once you put her upright.

I was wondering what happened!  ;D

New rotella is in and bike is running between my legs as we speak. I'm just curious, when you drain all of the old oil and put the new in how is everything lubed up for when you start it? Or is there just enough residual oil on the cam and cylinder walk just until New oil gets pumped through the system.

The cam sits in a "bath tub" of oil. The rest of the engine is lubed like normal.

Ahh, I went a hair above the upper mark on the oil with the bike vertical. When I say a hair, it's barely over it. This couldn't hurt anthything, am I right?

Ride at 60 mph for 10 minutes and it will drop to normal  ;D

Won't hurt anything.

A little hard to read but here's the oil path:

What is that link highlighted area? Spot for an oil cooler?

Yes, but disregard that. It will drop your oil pressure too much.

Here's a good shot of where the cam sits. It stays bathed in oil.

Hmmm, a bathtub you say, yeah, I get what you're sayin now with the oil always staying in contact with the cam. So you can never get all the old oil out unless you do a full rebuild, or if you flip the bike upside down...

Just make sure you drain the tank and carb before you flip it!  ;D

Ha  ;D
You're a good guy, thanks for the guidance on this lovely bike of mine. I'd rather come here than the local mech, cause he really doesn't know the savage as well as everyone on here does. I'd think he would fall down if he knew I put rotella in. I now know that that's the best oil to use, and I've only heard good things about it.

You've definitely come to the right place. These guys know their stuff and are always eager to help.  :)

Hey, this may be off topic, but a while back, I managed to strip one of  my exhaust stud holea in my head probably about 2/3 of the way in, I was able to catch about a 1/2 inch, maybe of threads at the end that we're still good and untouched.what I did was went out and found the longest stainless m8x1.25 bolt and took the head off of it, essentially making it into a stud. I cleaned both the hole and the stud with carb cleaner and compressed air and applied red threadlocker to the stud to set it in the head. Now I just slide that clamp over the two studs and put lock nuts on. Do you think I run the risk of pulling the threads out of the hole I buggered up? Or should I not worry about it. It's also been like that for about 10 months now.

It might not even be a half inch that I'm catching, could be less, but not by much.

Studs transfer torque more efficiently than bolts. As long as the thread locker doesn't burn out, you're golden! I've thought about swapping my header bolts for studs so that I don't strip them. I haven't done it yet though. There for a while I was pulling off the header quite a bit trying to get my exhaust to stop leaking (with the Dyna). I was getting paranoid that I'd strip the head.

Post by Redryder652 on 04/11/16 at 21:29:40

IMHO, I feel very comfortable with the studs in there, well the one that isn't stripped. I'd do it if I were you. I personally am not a huge fan of how crumbly aluminum gets.

Do you think that threadlocker would ever burn out? I think it goes up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

300°F should be fine. I don't think the head gets that hot.

My Trail Tech Vapor had a temperature gauge on it, and I had it located on the left rear cylinder stud.  On normal days and normal rides the temperature would be between 240-280 degrees - but on those 95+ degree days that you were stuck in city traffic, cruising down the interstate at 70 mph, or following Oldfeller up a gravel mountain road in 1st gear.....the temperature would reach 300.  I would expect the stud next to the exhaust port to be significantly hotter then the left rear cylinder stud.

I didn't expect the head to get THAT hot!

Dang me neither....

It'll be fine. And if it isn't, I'll fix it.
