Title: Carb lube?
Post by DesertRat on 04/03/16 at 07:45:38

our case breather runs into our air box.

that's dumping oil vapors into the air intake of the carb.

is this lubing the carb or does that mean we have a quasi 2 stroke?  ;)

Noe. we still got 4 strokes... just slimey ones... ;D

why dump the breather into the air box then?

is there an "engineering" or "efficiency" purpose for this?

so the oil fumes get burned in the combustion chamber, instead of being vented to atmosphere
It's primitive emissions control equipment
PCV system on your car does the same thing

ahhh, like old PCV on older cars, that makes sense Art ...

how does this affect performance and tuning on our bikes?

does it make a difference in the notorious backfire issue?

I doubt it, big singles pop, it's part of the charm
as to performance, I doubt it has much effect one way or the other, I've eliminated PCV systems on old cars in favor of breather caps (like on even older cars) and not seen any loss / gain in power or driveability I could detect

EPA types would scoff if you didn't vent it into the airbox.

i bring this up as I get closer to the board tracker build. As this build is using our bike as the donor and would like to trim down everything.

trying to figure out how to run the breather to the air filter, maybe thru a makeshift manifold??? not sure how or IF that would create issues / vacuum blah blah

I read on here somewhere that it should stay the same length approx. as the original carb-to-air box coupler for "ideal performance/flow" etc ...

Some of the ones I've seen just have a little pod filter on the end of the breather hose and have the hose tie wrapped to the frame somewhere.

you're confusing the airbox to carb with the breather hose.  2 different requirements.
you need this length of duct to make the carb work best.
breather hose can be any length, it's just to route bypass gasses to the intake and to keep dust bunnies outta the case.
all you need on your breather is a filter, if you route it to the intake duct, mission accomplished.

looking at our stock air box, the breather hose is AFTER the air filter, so all "gases" go straight into the duct without filtering, right?

so as you have stated, I could just run the breather to the duct, after the filter and call it good?

to a point, that's what I'd do.
you need to consider what happens when you get a "wet one"
In my case, it'll drip outta the air filter and not up the carb.

better to have the coupler and filter downward and  connect the hose closer to the filter than carb end ... got it

We've seen slides stick because of fingerprints.
Allowing a glob of snot from the vent tube can't be a good idea.

Just remove hose to air box ,
then plug & seal hole at air box. Get a Uni crank case filter & install at end of hose coming off of rocker box.

good ideas ...

Hose goes into empty beer-can, zip tied to the frame.
The beer goes in your belly.

In California that would be considered a "open container"

A cheap 12mm foam breather filter is all you need.  Like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/12MM-ENGINE-INTAKE-OIL-CRANKCASE-VALVE-VENT-CLAMP-ON-MESH-YELLOW-FILTER-BREATHER-/191129722086?hash=item2c80381ce6:g:LBQAAOSwsB9V9Mws&vxp=mtr

I liked the beer can thing, especially with PBR cans, (bikers choice for a long time, was PBR)

PBR  is great beer, it's the best beer for your money, I try to keep at least 50 to 100 cans chillin at all times. Never know who might show up !
