all of those tanks are fake and hold the electrics.
some also hold the battery.

so we don't have enough oil pressure from the pump for an external tank?

there would be no way to port one in?

Our bike has a "wet sump"....where the oil is stored in the crank/transmission case. The oil pump picks up oil from the bottom of the engine and pumps it to the pressure points. The engine, clutch and transmission all use the same oil.

Bikes that have an oil tank - have a "dry sump".....and a pressure pump and a scavenge pump. The pressure pump picks up oil from the storage tank and pumps it to the pressure points - then the oil that falls to the bottom of the engine is picked up by a scavenge pump, and it is pumped back to the oil tank. Dry sump systems are most often used in engines where the crankcase and transmission are separate and do not share the same oil.

There is no reason to put a real oil tank on the Savage.....it would serve no purpose on a wet sump engine. The fake oil tanks are for those folks who want to mimic an "old school" look.

Have you ever heard of Oil-in-frame?
It was a technique in use on British motorcycles of the '50s.

I know a bike builder (Roberto Totti) who converts the modern motorcycle frames, especially Triumph , Norton , etc.,to copy that idea.

In theory it would allow the oil to cool and simultaneously to increase the capacity. I'm not sure we can do on our bikes and what benefits it gives.
Anyway it is definitely very interesting.

Rage,

All of the bikes that you mention were dry sump systems.

The Savage/S40 is a wet sump system. as pointed out earlier by Dave.

Some have added oil coolers. Just how satisfactory it was, I dunno. I'm not really seeing the reason. We've got guys with tons of miles and they didn't need to modify the oil capacity.
We Have shown that they Will run over filled and not foam the oil. You Can add oil until it's just visible in the bottom of the window, sitting on the sidestand.
Or, play it by the book. Pay attention, carry a little oil.

Any oil tank above the existing oil level will potentially drain back when shut off causing an overfill situation and all of the inherent problems.

You'll need to create a method for filling the tank and draining it.
Taps for it could be from the existing ports in the case.
And I would design it to withstand at least 100 psi.
Red line oil pressure is over 50 psi.
