Title: New Roof, Anniversary means no trips for me :(
Post by old_rider on 03/29/16 at 20:54:16

Well, thought i'd at least get to go to one of the trips this year.... got a nerve burning session coming up (hopefully, missed my first one because I got sick), so riding was in my plans.
But yesterday while picking up the yard to mow.... I found two shingle tabs....sigh.
We have had a few days of really stormy weather and the wind decided to have its way with my roof. No leaks, but I got up there to check it out, and it don't look purdy.
The company that built the house used standard cheapo shingles, and they are actually wearing small circles in them, how? I haven't the foggiest, there is literally nothing that touches them. (13 years old)
So, looks like a new roof, probably going to do metal ($$$$$$) as it lasts up to about 50 years.
Then in September, we celebrate 30 years together and momma wants to do something special.... we haven't decided yet.
We were going to go up and see some of them Giant Red Trees in northern California.... but it is a 3-4 day up event, 2 days there, and 3-4 days back. Not sure the wife can take 10 days off in a row... but we are going to attempt to get it done, and see a lot of stuff on the way up and back :)

Hey Old Rider. I am having my roof done also. A lot of my shingles were blown off. I called my insurance and they are actually paying for it, I just have to come up with the deductible. The deductible is still more money than I would like to spend but still a lot less than the $9k or so the new roof will cost. Good luck to you.

Don't give me any ideas Dave!... take her out for a two day vacation and bring her back home to a house with a new roof with a bow on top :)

The barn, old chicken coop and plantation house(small one, but a real plantation house none the less) all have metal roofing. Installed in 1925 and still going strong. Need to replace some of the wood, but the metal is fine.

You OBVIOUSLY chose the wrong brand and Probably didn't wrap it right. Cast iron cookware requires a minimum of three inches of foam rubber.

Man,, that looks like it hurt, after you woke up.

OldRider: As springman noted see if your insurance will cover a new roof.  Then, add $$ to get metal.... FYI Not all metal roofs are equal. Nor are all installers of metal roofs.   (Yeah, I have metal .. 16 ga. aluminum that looks like tile. In the 10 years I've been here the neighbors with shingles have had three (3) new roofs due to hail damage.)

Metal is easy to put on.  The insurance gave me 5100$ and the metal only cost 3100$ ,  I paid my brother 1K$ , pocked 1K$ and we put it on in 3 days !   ;)

Metal is easy to put on.

Ask Paladin about that. Looks like cast iron can be applied one handed.

Yea , you order it the length you want (down to the inch ) , then when ya get to the angles pieces then one of ya measures ant the other cuts .   Be sure to use the foam pieces under the metal so wasp don't get under it ...  and you don't have to take the shingles off either - just put the metal right on top of the shingles , the heat will bond the shingles like never before.   ;)

Smart move Art.

Year ago before modern metal roof there might have been an excuse for using shingles ,  but seems to me those days are long gone .  ;D
