Title: New bike in the family
Post by gizzo on 03/29/16 at 04:08:55

Picked up another bike on the weekend. Well, the offspring's boyfriend bought it and dumped it at our place, anyway. Its a 1980 Plastic Maggot (or CX500C to it's friends). He's got a plan to build a cafe racer out of it. It's not too bad, considering it's lived its life on an island. All the chrome is trashed, nothing some oven cleaner and black 2 pack can't sort out. The engine runs great, there's no oil in the water or water in the oil and it only has 34,000km on the clock. Worked out some rearsets for it today and looking at new handlebars and stuff. This should be fun. Building a bike on someone else's coin, what's not to like?  :)

Nice bike. I picked a weathered first year '78 from my son, who wasn't getting time to work on it. It needs some carb work. Both my son and then I considered going the cafe route, but I'm thinking of keeping it as an original survivor.

However, yours is a C (Custom) model and is not quite a true "Plastic Maggot". I think that name was reserved for the original CX500, which had an unusual plastic headlight nacelle and a plastic rear fender. That is one reason why I am hesitant to chop mine up.

One thing not stock is the exhaust system. The old mufflers were rusted out and where they connect to the "goat bladder" crossover chamber is falling apart. The whole thing was replaced with a MAC 2 into 1 system. That jettisoned about 30 lbs of ugliness.

and just the bike Moto Guzzi should build for the US, rather than chasing the ever larger engine as they now are doing. :D

Cool, I've been curious about this bike for quite some time. I tend to see them pretty cheap on Craigslist here in Houston but I know zilch about this bike. Hope you all enjoy these bikes.

I've always liked those bikes.  But I also have a Moto Guzzi and a BMW air head so maybe I just have a thing for cylinders that stick out in the wind.

CX's can be had here from 5-800 most days. I've been threatening to buy one for awhile.
