Title: Front Fender Backwards???
Post by FickAJ on 03/23/16 at 16:16:23

I recently took off my front fender to paint it. got a new front tire, fresh brakes and im ready to reasemble this thing.  problem is i dont recall which way the fender goes on.  fresh paint scratches easy and i only wanna take one shot at putting it back on.

i notice one side has an extra lip of steel under the edge is that the front or the back??    or does it not matter can it go either way??

thanks in advance of any helpful answers

Fick

from the microfiche, I ASSUME this is the correct way to mount the fender.

*arrows and text are MY addition, not in original microfiche

Are they reversible?

I dont think its reversable otherwise why would one side have the extra plating and one side not.

I have no clue but if the mounts are dead center then it should be reversible, or at least mount backwards with no problems.

I'm ASSUMING the extra metal is for the "leading edge", which gets a lot of road debris kicked up into it.

Put it on with the extra plated side in front like the drawing suggests.
didnt wanna risk scratching it or i wouldve tried it both ways.

it looks good and so does my paint

Another example of why the disassembly process is so important.
I draw things, and study parts, and place them in a line, whatever it takes to be sure that going together won't be a puzzle. Even though I go to such lengths, I Still have the occasional
Huhh?
At least if it's something that I didn't just paint I can sometimes get a clue by studying the marks of a bolt or something.

The longer side is to the rear. :)

longer side??  didnt know there was one thinking it may be on backward now

i fully agree disassembly needs to painfully important.  and i was being super careful when i took it off.  all the bolts went into parts trays in order i even took a few pics on my phone.   its just for whatever reason i didnt think about fender orientation.  only difference i can see is the extra plate steel on one side.   i currently have that in the front.   maybe its wrong i cant tell.

A J,

The longer part of the fender is toward the engine, and to the best of my knowledge the fender has never been off of the bike.

I think so. I just went out and looked at mine, which I'm sure hasn't ever been off. KennyG is right. Extra piece of metal on mine is in the back. From the front of the fender to appx the center of the forks is about 11". From the rear to the same spot it's about 12 1/2".

You said it looks good. If you like the way it looks I doubt having it reversed makes much difference in the way it functions. If the roads you ride on are as crappy as the ones in my part of the country, it won't be long before you have to paint it again anyway if you want  be perfect. :(

what about the extra plate?  can u slip a finger under it??

Since the road crap slings up and back, if someone was gonna reinforce it, rear edge does kinda make sense.
If it's a simple rolled edge, then I could see that on the front, but if it's a plate, doubling the thickness all the way across, I can see how they would have done that to protect the outside of the fender from getting little bumps on it, paint cracking, from rocks smacking into it on the inside.

aren't our bikes shipped here unassembled from Japan and put together here in the US by the dealerships?

Rat,

From what I have seen at the dealers they may have to attach the handlebars on some bikes.

No. It just doubles the thickness. Extends from the rolled edge up about an inch and a half or so.

Extra layer toward the engine. See the hole in the center of the plate? It is the guide hole for a front mudflap. The fender is designed to use a Harley Sportster mudflap circa 57-62.

Look in J&P Cycle's vintage catalog. Any narrow flap will work fine, but rubber will outlast leather.

woke up today and went out and flipped around.   it looks correct.
mudflap hole is now in the rear and it looks good.

time to ride
