Title: Visibility ?

I was on the interstate once, and there was a bike behind me that had the headlight on steady - but there were two smaller (but very bright ) lights on each side of the headlight that were alternating on/off.

It was irritating to have those lights in my rear view mirror for mile on end, and I finally slowed down and made him pass me.

The headlight modulators that pulse the headlight aren't nearly as offensive as those flashing lights - but I am not so sure how well they actually work at getting a distracted drivers attention.

If you want to find one to buy.....just to a search on "headlight modulators".

I'm curious about the statistics on those.
I wonder if they still get people turning left across them.
No matter what else you do, watch the drivers heads and hands if you can see them,  then the front tires,  bumper dive equals brakes,
Never ever let equipment be your safety. Watch the clowns..

Just my opinion...

I don't think they are very effective. They're too regular. They go on, off, on, off, etc. Drivers don't see things that are regular. If they could somehow be made to pulse at different intervals then MAYBE it would be helpful. That's really the only way to get their attention.

On a side note, the other night I was riding by a church with my high beam on. A car stopped at the end of the church driveway waiting to pull out. I turned my high beam down to low so I wouldn't blind the driver. I was close enough to the car that there was no way she couldn't have seen me. You know where this is going! Yes, she pulled out in front of me. I don't think a modulating headlight would've helped in that situation.

I Watched a guy in a pick-up truck pull out in front of an ambulance. Not some dinky little thing. Like a mobile ER. Lime green and reflective stuff all over it. No lights and sirens, just going up the road, but still, the ambulance had to blow the horn and that pickup kept coming. A bike would've been in a real bind.

Next than what is I change a light to blue ?

I mounted a yellow/white strobe on the front of my bike, and use the Passing Switch to control it.  I only use it when I am not sure if the people see me......I flash it too be sure that they see me.  I am afraid to use the passing light to flash the high beam - as some folks interpret that as permission to go ahead and pull out in front of me.

I'm with Dave. Flashing the high beam to most drivers means "go ahead, i see you." I never flash at anyone. i use my horn and also sweep side to side in my lane so there is lateral movement of me and my headlight to catch the drivers attention. regardless, we are responsibe for our safety and always have to be prepared for someone pulling out at every driveway and every intersection. trust no one.

Not clicking your high beam to low might have, as many drivers interpret ANY change of beam intensity as 'go ahead'
Not yourfault she was dumb, but just for future reference
I bought a day glo jacket and yellow helmet a few years back, to improve visibility
I had MORE near misses
switched back to black and guess what?
whod'a thunk basic biker black was a 'safety color' ? ;D

I used my lights and the lane sweeping methods to alert drivers to my presence. None ever gave me a thumbs up and went for it.

I have a blinking headlight and back off LED brake lights.  I've ran them for a couple of years and about 12K.  I think they help. The headlight may not be "COOL" but it  helps people see me.  I know, I know nothing takes the place of good sense and tactics when riding.

Well JOG, I live in a town with a pop of less than 4000
I had the ONLY Ninja 500 in town, much less the only red one
and EVERYBODY likely saw me in tha dayglo jacket off the bike 1 time ior another
Wow, and here I thought Columbus Texas was a friendly little town  :-?
maybe the wife had a bounty out on me  :o

Your Wife? Naaah,, ohh, yeah, that's it, suuure, the wife,, of COURSE..

Seriously, how much did you ride in your

jacket, before you went back to the Johnny Cash look?
That's weird, brighter colors and more drivers gunning for you.
Not only is that counter intuitive, it doesn't make sense, either.

Only way to pretty much guarantee to be noticed is to paint a naked lady on your leathers...

Or have a chain gun mounted to your handlebars...

Or an RPG...

Or have a chain gun mounted to your handlebars.

I'm liking that one. Be able to deal with more than one.
But the minigun looks good, too.
I'll even let her drive.

Well of Course she thought highly of it. Look how she is holding it.

As in an HID headlight?

I think one or two folks here have done that... I went with an LED.... much brighter than the old standard savage/s40 head light.

I have a dayglo orange / reflective tape safety vest I wear sometimes. I think it helps.

One thing working against it is, nowadays so many workers wear them that they are nothing unusual to see.

Bottom line, I practice hard braking and swerving and trust no one in a cage.

I was riding with some out of towners the other weekend. They come from a bigger city with even worse drivers than my home. When they see a vehicle at in intersection they do a little weave instead of any lights. They feel the weird movement attracts attention and it increases the side profile a bit. Seems to work for them anyway. They don't seem like stupid people. FWIW etc...

3 years, and I still wear it sometimes
I think maybe it's target fixation
or maybe they're more scared of a biker in leather than an motorcyclist in dayglo
who knows? I just know I had more close calls that way, and still do, than wearing the leather

That may be why some riders go with horns, dinosaur fins and weird cyborg-like tubes and boxes on their helmets... make yourself look savage and monstrous and drivers are startled and desire no contact with you. I dunno.   :-/
