Title: I thought it was windy!
Post by springman on 03/14/16 at 20:37:25

I went for a short ride Sunday late morning. It was fun but it sure felt like the wind was blowing hard. I was being pushed all over. After the ride I was going to let the bike cool off and then work on it a bit. Well, looks like it really was windy. Instead of working on the bike, I had to do some clean up.  >:(

Was it the "shutdown blast" that did in the fence? :-?

It's not windy till the neighbors start swapping fences or backyard equipment.

That sucks is correct. My son and I cleaned it all up and went to home depot to buy what we need to repair it. So fence repair is what is on the schedule for this weekend. Of course, now it appears it is going to rain this weekend. >:(

Wind?

I think I see the culprit. Neighbor kids kicked their ball into your fence and knocked it over.

How are you going to repair that?

What actually broke is the posts that go into the ground. I disconnected the picket sections and hopefully I will be able to reinstall these sections onto the new posts with a minimum of new pickets. That is the plan anyway. It is 70 feet of fence and just with the limited supplies I bought the expense is already at $150.00. So the more I can salvage, the better.

Or... maybe I should jest get Pele to pay for it all! ;D

That's what I thought you would need to do.   IF the posts were set in concrete before, I don't know if that would be a:
Plus: dig out the old concrete and you already have a hole
Minus: Can't dig out the old concrete, have to dig new holes.
or
Posts were not set in concrete.  How big a pain to dig the new holes through the rotted posts?
Kinda curious how it all comes out, as I have a similar situation.

Post by Gus on 03/15/16 at 12:03:56

As an old farm boy; I can tell you that the posts rotted at ground level and that part on the ground is still solid and needs dug out. The panels will have to go up the second time same as the first time or there'll be headaches galore.

Title: Re: I thought it was windy!
Post by springman on 03/15/16 at 13:43:35

Yep, I really do not yet know if the posts were set in concrete or not as it was all still a bit muddy. If they were set in concrete I will probably have to make the post holes right next to the old post holes. I have dug up the remains of a post and concrete before and it was a royal pain. I do not intend to do that.

Like Gus said though, if I have to dig the holes next to the old holes then the panels will not line up and it will require much more work. Anyway, I am putting it off until the weekend so I'll let you know what happens Youzguyz,

You just need duct tape, gorilla glue, and JB weld!  That'll fix anything.

Title: Re: I thought it was windy!
Post by springman on 03/15/16 at 15:24:44

You know, duct tape and JB weld are definitely my go to's. I have never tried Gorilla glue, but I have heard it is good.

I'd replace the posts with steel pipe in concrete, it'll last you pretty near forever.
You just need to replace the in between every so often.

wow, that sucks
at least it's at ground level, me and a freind put up my carport to put my trailer under today
I will never again 'raise' a built frame onto legs  ;D

That is actually a pretty good idea Versy. I looked up some pictures though and not sure I really like the look. Especially since I did all of the back fence (the longest side) a couple of years ago in all wood. If I were doing the whole fence I think I probably would go with the steel posts.

It helps if you know there a strong gusts. It is much scarier when it catches you by surprise.

Being from down here in Hurricane central, I have replaced many a fence and often wondered why the fence companies use the "tie in" type metal between fence posts and make one big no seamed fence line.

So when I redid an 80 foot section between me and my neighbor to the north... I built one that is sectioned, 6 foot between centers of my ground posts.
I then cut umpteen billion pieces of 2" X 4" pieces of wood and made some "shelves" for the 2 X 4's that go from post to post. I then just set the fence boards about 1/4" to about 1/2" gaps between to adjust for the coverage between posts.
I only used 2 each 2 X 4's per section, 1 foot off the ground and 1 foot from the top of the fence... yeah they bow a little now and then, but still serve the purpose of a privacy fence and keep kids and animals out.
I then put 3 screws on each end fence board into the 4 X 4 posts, so that only six screws hold the fence sections up, but since they rest on my 2" X 4" shelves weight is no problem.
Now all I have to do when a Hurricane comes is to remove six screws per section, then lay them down in the yard and strap them together.
I could also put an anchor or two to hold down the whole lot if needed.
My initial idea was to put anchors along the side of my house and use the sections to protect my plastic siding and windows.... I still might do that.

I like that idea.
I worked for a lock and door mfr once.
You test the system by firing 2x4's out of a cannon at the door/lock system similar to firing thawed chickens at a/c canopies... the frozen ones go thru.  I don't know what they do for the artic, any fn bird caught flying out in a storm is apt to be frozen.
I don't think the fence will survive but may slow the projectile enough to allow the window/siding to survive.

Hey Youzguyz, I said I would report back so here is the scoop. The rotted posts were set in concrete, so between that and huge roots next to the tree that has grown so much, the spacing of the posts had to be changed and was not consistent. Therefore I had to remove all the pickets from the old fence, removing each screw one by one (took a very long time). I replaced all the posts, and most of the six inch wide board at the bottom of the fence. I used only two new 2x4x8 and after  tearing up 3 phillips head bits and wasting all that time with those screws I switched to T5 star head screws and the pace really picked up. I have probably over 40 man hours now into the clean up, reclaiming of the wood and installation of the "new" fence but still have about one or two hours left before I finish. Working in the dark was just too difficult and I was tired and hungry anyway. Hopefully I will be finished with it tomorrow night. Cost of new materials not counting post hole digger and shovel was around $200.00. :o

By the way, I call it my zig zag fence. I could not find my string when I got started and could not be bothered to go buy some. Yep, I eyeballed it. It probably would have been straighter if I would have had a few drinks first. ;D

hahah I slapped together my carport with the 'eyball no plans' method, and it's not exactly a thing of beauty (or quite finished for that matter) but it's pretty solid, so what the heck

I always have a ball of cotton string, or at least an old broken stick or broom or mop handle with about 150' or so on it.
I keep so much little crap and scraps, I could come up with something for just about any use.
I keep any type of little metal things I see on the ground when going into a store or parking lot, the wife knows this, so she brings me bolts, nuts and screws too.
Last month she brought me what she thought was a bearing race, that I could probably use as a spacer. It actually was a men's TRITON tungsten carbide ring with a silver filling.... not worth much, but it fits my right hand pinky finger and replaces the spacer I used to wear there (until I used it for a real spacer).

Anyway, I've always said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if i'm holding it, driving it, or made it, it's a beauty!"  ;D

Good point there Old Rider. I tend to save up a lot of "junk" also which quite often does come in handy. The issue here is I know I have a spool of string, I just can't find it.

Well the fence is finished. The last 16 pickets or so were put up with me holding the board and flashlight while my son drove in the screws.  :DIt was a pain in the back side to do, but at least the dogs can roam the back yard on their own again.

I have one of those I use when I am feeding the outdoor boiler all winter....in the dark.  It works really well.

The weird part about it is when you use it in the summer.  I kept seeing little white lights in the grass reflecting back at me....and the reflected light seemed to pulse or glimmer.  At first I thought it was just the LED light reflecting in the dew....then when I carefully walked toward the light and got really close down on my knees.....it turned out the LED light reflects back from the eyes of Spiders in the grass!  It is kinda spooky seeing how many of them are hiding in my grass!

I know they're beneficial for the most part, so I mostly live and let live, but I don't like them much

Dave... you would not believe the number of the ground spiders we have here!!!

I spent about an hour one night hunting them down and stomping them! ROFL, it worked better than any spray I ever used!
But my ankles the next morning were hurting a bit  ;D

My wife (after I showed her) does not go out after dark in our back yard.... there were literally hundreds of them....

They are called "Wolf Spiders".....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_spider
The article says Carolina ones are the largest with a one inch body... apparently ours have mutated!
I'll see about taking a picture of one I find, LOL, and maybe I can talk it into sitting on a ruler.... :o

Title: Re: I thought it was windy!

size of "good" spiders may vary
"good" = stomped on.

Title: Re: I thought it was windy!
Post by Dave on 03/22/16 at 11:08:29

It is a bit weird that a normal flashlight doesn't reflect from spider eyes like the LED's do.....or maybe it is the fact that the light mounted on your forehead is so near to your own eyes....while a flashlight is down by your waist.  It is really interesting that those tiny eyes can reflect a bright pulsing light back 50 - 60 feet!

Regardless.....it was a bit weird once I discovered how many spiders there are in my yard!
