Title: 5 Wire Tachometer EXPLAINED
Post by Suzukisavvy on 03/10/16 at 09:52:53

Here I have a Tachometer with 5 wires.

Confusing right? -Yeah I know the feeling..

Well after more research than I should have done on it, I finally understand.

So hopefully with the facts straight forward, you wont have to dig like I did to figure this puppy out.

The long wires! - These are the lighting.

- Red is positive and is connected to the red and black striped wire on the horn. How? Remove the boot from the horn and place the red wire on the metal post in the horn and slip the boot back on.

-The long black wire is the ground and is attacked to the screw on the ignition coil for a ground.

-The short green wire is attached to the negative post of the ignition coil (the one with the yellow and black stripe wire)

-The short black wire. GROUND you might think.. WRONG! It's connected to the positive side of the coil (the orange wire) and again the green wire and the short black wire are attached by removing the boot and placing the wire on the post and pressing the boot back down on the post.

-And finally... The short yellow wire with the black stripe. Simple. Connect to the red and black striped wire on the horn with the red positive wire.

Short recap!
-Red- Positive (on horn under boot of black and red striped wire)
-Long Black- Negative (connected to screw on ignition coil)
-Green- Negative (connected to post on ignition coil under boot)
-Short Black- Positive (connected to positive post on coil under boot)
-Yellow Black Stripe- Positive (connected to horn with red wire)

I hope this helps other confused members with a 5 wire tack! For different types of tachs PM me and I will explain those too.

Get this tach off of amazon- $12.99

This should be moved to the technical documents.

You've explained where each wire goes but I'm more comfortable with what each wire does. That way I can wire it however I like.

There's typically a pos and neg to run the gauge, a light wire (neg is already grounded through the gauge ground) and a sensor wire. That's 4. I don't know why you would need 5 wires. Anybody?
