Title: Sticking with it.....
Post by raydawg on 03/02/16 at 17:12:30

I made a News Years resolution.... yeah, I know, great  ::)
But I really wanted to get my health together before I retire. Overall, I am in good shape, my blood work shows no signs of any diabetes or ills.
I was, am, carrying to mcsh bulk. At 6 foot and 253 I want to get to 200, or less, so I made the resolution to finally DO IT!
I have lost over twenty pounds coming in at 230 today.
I feel better, have energy, but most of all, I really want to do this and hold it for the rest of my days....
So far all I have done is eat smarter/better. When I get to around 220 I will start doing some training to trim and build tone.

I will do this  ;D

PS: I will be the prettiest 63 year old riding a savage in Pudget Sound, soon  :-*

Well, if you lose weight and start getting more energy, she probably will want to know :) or she will find out when you start chasing her around again :D

I was 198 at 5'10" and dropped 50lbs for my 50th birthday :)
By 53 I had gained back 45lbs....

Keep with your program.... do it for something... you , her, the kids, the grandkids, or a longer life..... if you do it for a good reason, you will stick with it :)

Tho heaven beckons and I look forward to its day of joy, I sense my job is not done here  :)

Raydawg, good luck with that resolution. Sounds like you've taken it serious up to this point. It's hard the older you get it seems. I'm 5'11" and bounce around in the hi 180's. I have for a few years. I know id feel better if I lost 15 lbs. or so.

Best of luck, Raydawg!

After my 2013 'cycle accident that shattered my left knee, I got up to 180 lbs from being less active (I'm 5'8", 58 yrs old, btw). In Oct 2014, I decided to "take my life back" with weight training, moderate cardio, & tracking my nutrition closely. By the time my 40th hi school reunion rolled around last July, I was 142 lbs & had gained some lean muscle mass. (Was gratifying to see that the jocks in my class were sporting "bay windows" over their belt buckles...lol.)

If a non-jock like me can do it, you can, too!   :)

'dawg:  Now that finished verbally abusing you.    ;)    Go for it and good luck.  ( The doctor just told me to lose some weight and get more exercise, so...)

Dawg, I'd go ahead and add the strength and cardio now, plus mobility work, I think you'll make faster progress
Just don't overdo it, a good setup for general fitness would be something like this
Monday, Thursday: strength
this can and should be very basic, an upper body pull, and upper body push, squats, deadlifts  A sample:

Monday: Lat pulldowns / pullups, bench press, DL
Thursday: Barbell row or seated row, Overhead Press, squats

Tuesday, Friday
conditioning, walk, jog, do wind sprints, make yourself sweat
Pushups ,inverted rows, unweighted squats in a circuit, squat thrusts or burpees, you name it, it goes here

Wednesday: mobility work
stretching, dynamic mobility exercises (bear crawls and such) or just do some easy beginner yoga

this works for us older fellas if we're not stupid about how fast to progress
the strength work will help retain bone mass / density as well as muscle, the conditioning will improve cardio health and endurance, and the mobility work will keep all the moving parts greased up and moving smoothly

as bad as my mobility is, I do a this every day, to keep things moving

Can't I just take a pill?...

Go ask Alissa ?   ;D     I'm sure it would be OK though !

Daytime TV Weather channel in Huntsville show the Hip-Hop-Abs  commercial 50 time a day !
        the young lady says:  " I went from a size 16 to a size 3 "  ::)

could be better than a pill ?  ::)

Good Luck  !

P.S. to earlier post:

3 cautions, Raydawg, since Rule #1 of * ahem* "Senior Fitness" is "Don't get injured!"

1) be aware of the form of each exercise. Start out with low resistance (weights, elastic bands, etc) and get the form/execution of the exercise down before increasing resistaance.

2) learn about Core Training. The body's core supports and influences virtually every exercise.

3) Look into strengthening your shoulders' rotator cuffs. I DIDN'T do this enough, tore my right rotator cuff, resulting in very painful surgery and a long, on-going recovery.

There are many good videos on the Internet to help you in this,  and a few sessions with a personal trainer might be money well spent. Google "scooby1961"....he has a goofy sense of humor, but the info Scooby preeseents is preetty solid.

Great advice, THANK YOU.

At work they provide trainers, 24/7.....
They will tailor a special program for you AND, I can even go each day, time willing, and train with them for 30 minutes to an hour.
Also, they provide online counselors who will help you reach your goals too.
My company is BIG on health, etc, and they are very generous in their support.

BTW, I just dipped into the 220's today, hallelujah  :)

Awesome you have reached 220, keep it up Dawg!
Myself I don't put a lot of faith in trainers unless they have very good credentials, most commercial gyms offer 'certification' via a written or online test that has more to do with getting customers through the machine based workouts quickly than with actual results
Scooby does have some good tips, unfortunately he is also up to here with 'bro science' so you have to take what he says with a grain of salt re 'this exercise is dangerous / will hurt you'
I've seen him say some pretty ridiculous stuff in his videos

No, not really. Summer time I wear a sweat band to keep it out of the eyes. Dang, that hurts.. But the t shirt isn't soaked.
I'm sweating more than when I was young, because Now I actually drink water. Back then, I hardly ever just drank straight water. Cola, polluted with some kinda alcohol, coffee, beer, but Water? Naaah... boy was That a mistake..
