Title: Don't take shortcuts when working on your bike
Post by Tocsik on 02/28/16 at 10:27:36

I've had a replacement breather hose for a while and decided to replace it today; mine was hardened and cracked where it connects to the nipple on the head.
I left the bike on the side stand, pulled the seat and disconnected the speedo cable from the tank but left the on the bike with a block of wood propping up the front so I could remove the chrome cover and access the breather tube connection.  I was being lazy and didn't want to pull out my bike stand or disconnect the fuel line and completely remove the tank.
Well, the block of wood shifted and tank fell toward the left side of the bike.  Now I have dents and scratches in my tank.
My mood is rather negative.  I mean it's just "stuff".  Not like someone I know was injured or ill.  But still, so mad at myself for letting this happen.
>:(
So, take the time to do the job right.  Even a little job.

Sorry to see you've damaged your tank. I'd be mad too. In fact, I am susceptible to things like that because I take to many short cuts too. So your not alone! Problem is, every time you see those flaws in your tank you'll be reminded of what you did and I HATE that!!!!

Sorry about the tank, remember the only people who don't screw up are the ones who don't do anything.  Nothing disappoints me more than myself when I screw something up.  My father was a successful man and he lived by a few simple rules. One time after I had screwed something up he said to me.  "Never worry about a mistake, worrying accomplishes nothing.  If you can fix it, then fix it.  If not forget about it."

I sympathize with you! I shot my muffler across the street at 40 mph by rigging up a cheap bracket for my Dyna. Call it a lesson learned! I have since built a very sturdy bracket that holds it correctly.

Do it right, do it once!  ;)

oh man that sucks, and it's the sort of thing I tend to do myself

Don't feel too bad, I was working on my bike last year, drained the tank and put it on the stuff piled up on the work bench. The extra weight of the tank caused an avalance. Ended up with a goodly dent about 2 inches long on the right front belly. Even being careful won't stop some stuff from happening. ;)

Yes, even the "pro's" do such things; as when they rebuilt the engine on my wife's Sunbeam - now if only they had put oil in it I am sure it would have worked better. ;D

Trippah, I had the same problem on a van only it was with the rear diff. How do you forget to put oil back in things that HAVE TO HAVE oil?  ::)

I have to fess up to doing that one myself once
my only defense is I was doing a lot more than an oil change and the driver was yammering in my ear the whole time
of course I was out of pocket for the repair

Dude, I don't know how to type the sound of kicking myself, but, you should try.

how about this? *boot!*
then again, 5-10 oil changes a day, plus brake jobs, tranny swaps, motor swaps, AC repair, cooling system repair, etc, etc, etc, 1 stupid mistake in 5 years is a pretty darn good record

Gotta somehow encompass the sound of the jeans on the calf contacting the thigh, followed by the sound of the boot heel hitting the butt. It's kind of a muffled clapping sound, like placing wrists together and clapping, with cloth in the equation, ending with a muffled thud.
Ask me how I know.....
