Title: Small portable gas can
Post by rong on 02/18/16 at 16:29:51

I am using the raptor pet thingy which has less reserve available than the standard pet thingy.  Am thinking about taking a small portable gas container on long trips (just in case).  A one quart container (about an extra 10 miles) would be a good size for me.

Any thoughts or ideas on a container about that size?

Thanks.

I have one of these and it works out pretty good.

If you want more reserve....just take take the petcock out and make the ON tube a little taller, and you will decrease the amount of fuel you can use on the main tank.....and increase the amount of the reserve.

You can use your stock petcock to determine how tall you want the tube to be.......or you can haul around one of those little bottles.

A few words of caution --

Don't carry fuel in an unapproved container (like a Gatorade bottle or something). It's illegal and will get you a ticket if the cop is a little nosy.  ;)

Thanks for the information.  Will look into that Optimus Fuel can.

I like the extra fuel available with the Raptor, without having to go on reserve, so will probably not change the Raptor's 'reserve tube'.  I read the information provided about how many reserve ounces are available in the Raptor's reserve, ... and about how long it will last.

Has anybody had any actual experience on how many miles they traveled on the Raptor's reserve?  I know the mileage may vary for each person, but just wondered if anybody has actually tried it ... and how far they went on the Raptor reserve before running completely dry.  Thanks for your information!

I've made 20 miles on reserve on the raptor
YMMV, I ride pretty gently, especially on a back road with zero traffic running on reserve with no gas station nearby

WOW...I ran 12 miles once... not much to see in the tank when I got to the pump. 8-)

I made a thread on here back in the day on how many exact miles I got onnreserve. I drove down a road until reserve ran out so I could share with you all

Not sure about how legal it is, but when in doubt, I use a thick rubber hot water bottle that I bought at the dollar Store. Holds maybe a couple of quarts and will not rupture if you crash.   I also use a separate one during cool rides full of hot water to put i my jacket to keep my chest or back warm and I make hot chocolate or soup when I pull over.

I measured my Raptor reserve.

I did it on the side stand, so maybe not correct for normal riding.
Anyway, I measured 42 fluid OZ which will give me about 21 miles ridden a bit conservatively. I am going to try running it dry one of these days whilst carrying a 20 OZ container of gas.

I measured the amount with the bike level....and there was 60 oz. of reserve when using the Raptor petcock.  Since there is 64 oz. in a half gallon.....you are going to be able to go about 25 miles on reserve if you get 50 mpg.  Chances are you will be riding slowly and smoothly after you switch that lever to RES....so I suspect you may  be able to stretch it to 30 miles before you start walking!  (Obviously strong headwinds and steep hills could influence your mileage).

When you are riding in unfamiliar remote areas....it definitely is a good idea to carry some extra fuel.

Just don't get them confused with each other!  ;D
