This looks like it could be a fun project to build....

So how does the oil stay in the engine?

There is only the oil in the piston cap (which lubes the wrist pin), and oil in the gas.
Really simple setup.... except for the drive shaft, the counter balance, the gear ratio...ect... LOL
I would really have to play with it a bit.... take an old single piston and tear it down and play :)
I like to tear stuff up :P

That won't play.
I need a link.

Interesting and clever,...
I enjoyed seeing it, and I'm glad he made it....
... but,.. glad I didn't... :-?

That's very clever. Great bicycle for getting in shape. Pedal till just short of collapsing, fire it up, get your breath back and  Pedal more.

Kinda like ranger training.... run 6 miles, walk 1, run 8 miles, walk 2..... ok not the same... but close :)

With a compression ration of 4:1.....why do you need a compression release?

Most of the old engines built with an open crank like this - had a drip oiler to supply the needed oil to the piston/cylinder.  If he rides this very far....that would certainly help the durability of the engine.

I've seen Bots Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Whoosh
four stroke description. Get down to such low compression and maybe it should be
Suck, gentle hug, poot, wheeze.
The only thing I can think of to justify the compression release is
Its friction drive and he couldn't calculate the real numbers to prove that it needed it or not.
Or
Thot it would be cool
Might be essential on a wet road, but the upside down piston just looks like a bad idea. The oilers look pretty good, im impressed. That's a pretty young dude who pulled that off. No idea what Gramps showed him,,
An excellent example of applied gizmology.
