Title: Wiring a 3 wire ignition switch?
Post by Savageman on 02/01/16 at 21:26:45

Is it possible to wire in a 3 wire ignition switch? I am having a hard time finding a quality 2 position 4 wire ignition switch. I found a very good 3 wire that has a heavy chrome box for mounting up on the handle bars.

The schematic shows that 2 pair of 2 wires short when ignition is on then 1 wire for tail light when in park mode. I never use that anyways. Maybe I need to wire in a SPST relay for the other pair of 2 wires?

Please HELP!  :-?

I believe you can wire in a two position ON/OFF switch.  The only reason the stock bike is not wired up that way - is to provide the ability to have that "park" feature for the lights.  We don't eed that feature in the US - but there are some countries that require you to have lights on when parked on the street after dark. (I had a car that was imported from Germany, and with the key turned off you could move the turn signal lever to either side, and the turn signal bulbs would light up steady......when the ignition was on they were turn signals and flashed).

If you search this forum you'll see that a lot of people have killed their battery with the park feature. I sometimes have to think which way is off and which way is park. I check my tail light all the time to make sure I actually turned the ignition off.   ;)

Once I've printed out the wiring diagram, I want to disable the "park" feature of the tailight while keeping the 4-way flasher function. It serves NO real function, IMHO, and is a potential liability on an elec-start only bike.

I disabled the "parking" feature.  Just took the tailight tap, and connected it with the others.
My switch is now, OFF-ON-OFF...

If you take out the stock switch and replace it....the park position will be gone.

There is really very little to figure out on the wiring.  The Red wire is from the battery and is not fused.  All the other wires then connect to the other terminal..the one that becomes "hot" when the switch is turned on.  The fuses are in the other wires after the switch.

Good point Serowbot....just moving a few wires is all that is really needed.

OK so take the brown wire out (tail park light) and the other 2 wires get 12volts when the switch is on. Sounds to easy.

Now I can have the ignition switch up on the handle bars right in the center where it belongs all in a nice heavy duty chrome switch box.

;D

That is too easy....you have to connect that brown wire to the orange wire....so that it gets juice only when the key is in the middle position.

Savage Man,

It would be very beneficial to some of the rest of us if you would post pictures of your finished ignition switch project and pictures of the wire connections.

OK NP I'll post some pictures as soon as I get enough motivation to go out there in the freezing cold garage and tear it apart. Time to refill the propane tank for the shop heater.  :-/

The links for the switch are here:
Search for "Relocation Ignition Switch Cover For Harley-Davidson" on ebay. bk-rider is the seller.
mid usa motorcycle parts for ig switch- part #15014 and they have a killer catalog of accessories.
Both the box and switch are about $25.00
I will use 14-4 round trailer cable wire to connect it.
