Title: Dyna muffler
Post by webbrob on 01/24/16 at 11:55:45

First mod to my bike after seven years. Installed a HD Dyna muffler. The original was rusting and had a distinct Jetsons space car sound going until she got warmed up. Pics to follow.

Couldn't get the muffler all the way up to the thick collar, no obvious leaks yet about to go for a test drive.

Hold a candle around the joint. If the flame blows, ya gotta leak!  ;)

It sure changes the look of the bike, doesn't it? In a good way. I don't know why Suz designed such a large obtrusive silencer for the nimble Savage.

Has anybody weighed the stock and Dyna muffler to get the weight savings? It's probably not a lot (unless the stock one coming off is full of rust and soot), but I would think that along with the better sound and trim appearance you can psychologically feel the weight loss.

I've gotta do this. My S40 wheezes like an emphysema patient breathing through a dog whistle til it gets hot. Rob, what did you pay for the new can?

I think the weight difference is around 7 lbs.  ;)

About 20 bucks. I still have two Sportster mufflers I bought by accident. I really wanted the ease of the Dyna install (mounting with a bolt and no hammer... :D

I have the tank and the carb off right now. I am going to pull the idle mix screw plug, put some washers in place of the full size one, and get to tuning it. Just gotta get a magnetic screwdriver, I don't wanna screw around with trying to get those screws back in, pun intended!

Do yourself a favor and get a good JIS screwdriver. Those screws are NOT Phillips head!

I will look for one of those. Right now I am battling the screws up top. Completely stuck. Go figure. I even tried an "easy-out" worthless. >:(

What size JIS?

Here is a link to the Vessel JIS sets....they are really nice.  I bought the Motorcycle repair kit - and unfortunately the impact driver just doesn't work and I wouldn't recommend it.  The 900 kit (not the 900/6 kit) is a good deal if you want the basic kit.....add the 920 kit if you want the stubby drivers.

Webb,

Below is a link to the set of 3 JIS Screw Drivers that has served me well for many years and by today's standards they are not awfully expensive.

The set on the left hand side of the page is the one that I have.

Thanks, Kenny. Does anyone know which size number is required for the Dyna conversion?

I don't understand why these drivers are expensive and hard to find,.. when everything is Japanese nowadays...

I just use bits... if the screw is booger to get out, it gets replaced with an allenhead...

Sonny,

The #1 & #2 are the sizes that you will use on carburetors.

Serowbot is absolutely right about replacing the screws with Allen Head Screws, preferably stainless steel.

Dave sells a set of Allen Head Screws for the Mikuni carb on our bikes.

If you are just replacing a couple of screws at a time, Ace Hardware will have screws that are much better than anything that is used to put the carbs together at the factory.

Yeah, I have sets of Dave hex-heads for the carb. I was wondering what size is involved in switching the stock muff for a Dyna.

What size of what?

What size of JIS screwdriver is needed for the muffler swap? #2?  #3?

Want a set of JIS for super cheap? Go to the dollar store.  Not the Dollar General or the Family Dollar, but the hole in the wall store that smells like a foreign country.  They will have JIS drivers and bits.

Sonny,

As I recall all of the muffler and header bolts and nuts are hex head.

You have to be careful with the fasteners holding the header to the head and you should us a 12 MM socket with a 1/4" Drive Ratchet If you break one of those fasteners off you will be in a world of hurt.

For clamps you will need 2 genuine Harley Davidson Muffler Clamps, and to attach the muffler to the frame extension Harley has a "Carriage Type Bolt" that works perfectly. I think both the camps and the mounting bolt take a 9/16" Socket.

Thank you. The JIS driver must be needed to get the stock muffler off...

I think I remember a Phillips screw on the stock muffler. It's been a while. I just used a Phillips screwdriver on it. It may be a JIS screw.

The only time I used a JIS screwdriver was for the screws in the carb.

Sonny, I don't remember using a single screwdriver for the muffler, all bolts... 8-)
