agreed, the workmanship looks great, but the bike as a whole is crap

Yea , that is a real rat bike !  ;D

I think it might be neat to put a 20-25 hp Diesel on a Savage frame when the original motor gives out.   Maybe with a tork-converter drive.  That would be about as "Rattie" as I could go !  ::)

Trouble is :  Finding a Tork-Converter drive to handle 25 Hp. that don't cost as much as a good used bike .

One project I have always wanted to do.......is take an early Mazda Miata that is simple and light, and put a small 3 or 4 cylinder diesel motor in it.

It wouldn't be very quick - but I imagine 50 mpg wouldn't be out of the question.

I just bought a Mazda6 about 3 weeks ago. It averages 41 mpg so far.  :)

Maybe someday he will get that engine sorted out - but my guess is the "twin turbo" setup really isn't needed for that small diesel....and likely he is just dumping too much fuel and not enough air into the engine.  I doubt if the little engine ever gets enough exhaust flowing to spin the turbos up to where they will make any boost.

But.....it looks "Bad A$$"! ::)

But.....it looks like a mechanical abortion

fixed that for ya  ;)

That certainly seems to be the case and I also wonder if the engine is sized correctly for the hydraulic pumps and motors.

Why build such a monstrosity? I understand the DIY attitude but that thing doesn't look like it would be good at anything. It's not even pretty.  :-?

Some really creative thinking and good work. I'm glad I didn't put the time and money in it,  because, frankly, I know I can have a Savage that is a lot more fun to ride and I could be across town in a lot less time and I could buy used, mod it, ride the snot outta the thing and have a bucket of cash left.
I hope he gets it running right.
If it was my problem to solve I'd run some air into the intake.
Looks like it is just rich.

I'm with the
Doesn't need a twin turbo setup
Crowd. Since he has a compressor and tanks, why not a trigger when coming off low throttle to dump compressed air into the exhaust and spool up the turbocharger? Or would it solve itself dropping to one turbo?

drop to one small turbo that'd spool properly and that'd solve the over fueling problem
Like the rest of that monstrosity, it's the result of 'engineering' for 'bragging rights' rather than for any useful purpose

It's
Over designed and
Under Engineered.

Most of the "Rat" crowd don't really care about aesthetics or even function.
As long as it runs (even a little) and looks rusty, its kewl !!

What's actually funny is they insist, in the rat rod (car) crowd, that that's how hot rodding really was in the 40s
My old man was around then, and he'd laugh himself sick at the idea that a 'rat rod' was a true 1940s hot rod
"nope" he'd say "we called those 'jalopies' it had to be held together with more than spit and bailing wire to get 'hot rod' status"
The rat bike crown is even worse
This bike is more 'steam punk' though, complexicated just for the sake of complexification

Well this is pretty cool.....and most likely cost a lot less money to build!

Is the frame made of schedule 40 gas pipe?

Title: Re: Smoker Motorcycle.....Why?
Post by Dave on 01/22/16 at 03:42:28

Yep.....black "iron" pipe - it is a fashion statement on that bike.

Probably not a problem - the guy appears to drive it around at engine and tractor shows.  The engine is an old hit & miss style engine.....he isn't going anywhere very fast!

(Not sure it qualifies to be titled as "epic")

wow...see the leg breaker spinning (left side) as he takes off?
Loose shoe string or pant cuff and bang..... :-/

I just opened the YouTube link (instead of watching it here). This quote says it all:

Quote:
Here is a hand made motorcycle built by Larry, with black iron pipe tubing for a frame. He calls it the Tractor Bike! The main body sheet metal is from a Farmall Cub. International Harvester engine. 3 speed transmission out of a Crossly automobile, with reverse. Fenders are tire covers out of an old car covering David Bradley wheels. Sears town and country headlight. Model T tail light.

It's Cool, but....
Rather have a Savage.
