So, has anyone tried converting the valve lifter to manual operation, like on the old Brit bikes?

Eddie,

Dave, one of the moderators on here, actually makes a kit to install a manual compression release on the S40/Savage.

He will catch up to you shortly.

Ryca makes one also:

Ryca also makes a setup that uses the stock shift lever to operate the decomp but it's kinda pricey and only works if the shifter has been relocated to work with rearsets on the cafe conversions or something similar.

Yep....I made one for my bike.  Last winter I bought enough parts to make a few to sell, and I have sold a couple to forum members.

I might have one left......not sure.

If the valves are seated - it takes a pretty good bit of leverage to pull the valves off the seats.  I am not sure how well that short RYCA lever would work.
